Now that the truck is done, I have to start thinking about the next project in line. I'm not going to say what it is, yet. Because I don't want to jinx it ( I've started posting about a project too soon before, and then something else happens, and before you know it its a couple of years later... But I'll show some of the parts. I have been searching for a cheap/rebuildable 2speed Powerglide transmission. Those were the go-to automatic in GM cars for many years. These days everything is 6 speeds or more, but the attraction to the Powerglide is that it is light ( relatively) small, it can easily be shortened, and it has massive aftermarket support ( drag and circletrack racing). I found 2 for sale from a ex-racer who had sold his race car. These were his spares. I already had a adapter to mate it to a 2litre Pinto engine. Mocked up with a dry sump pan ( yeah, it will be a racer). And I'm trying to work out how to mate the supercharger off a Mercedes C230 to the Pinto. I'm just in the planning/ parts collecting phase. Because I'm still working on other cars than need to be finished. When actual work on this starts, I'll do a buildthread on it...

The truck is absolutely gorgeous and you have managed to nail it all together in less time than it takes me to choose which cream cake I’m going to eat first.
As for your future project, being a dyed in the wool manual transmission type bloke*, I just can’t imagine why anyone would want an automatic and especially one where they have forgotten to fit most of the gears.
Having said that, I will follow the build avidly to find out what it will become because I have no doubt it will be fantastic and will make perfect sense and be constructed to the highest of standards.

*I actually do drive an auto (the Doc’s dogging car) and it is perfect for urban use but it isn’t something I would do for ‘fun’.

Thank you teaboy . The automatic is an experiment. These Powerglides, when race prepped, can accelerate really hard. Something to do with the torque multiplication in the torque converter. But I think the car will be more challenging to drive. My street freak Capri would let me do powerslides ( on its 10" wide wrinklewall drag tires... ) when it had a 5 speed. It wouldn't with a C4 automatic, a Ford 3 speed ( just didnt give me enough control). But in a very light car with relatively a lot of power, it could make sense. On a tight track, I could basically drive it like a shifter kart... Think of it as a low buck version of Jim Hall's Chaparral 2 speeds ( his were a lot nicer of course, but also a 2 speed with a torque converter) Sofar, I don't have a lot in it ( because of their popularity parts are available, even good used), and trying to find the right combination & setup is part of the fun. To put it in the chassis I have in mind will not take a lot of modification, so if it doesn't perform like I think it should, I can put it back to a conventional setup.

There may be a very good reason nobody is doing this. I'm about to find out...

I forgot to mention... ( and the new layout wont let me Edit yet. Same with 2 posts back, preform was a typo, it should be perform).
Part of race prepping the PG will be putting in a full manual valvebody.
So it can no longer shift on its own, like a automatic. You have to put it in the gear you want it to be in, like a manual.
Then there is also the possibility to eliminate the torque converter. It would get replaced with a splined hub that connects the PG to the engine ( 100%, all the time)
Clutch action is then internal, by bleeding off the line pressure with a ball valve ( this could be operated with a pedal). Working on the friction of the bands inside the PG. But I want to try a converter first.
All this is tried and true in circle track and drag racing. Because I do road track racing, mine will be a combination of the two...

I put the first 65 miles on the truck. Mostly to shake it down and see where we're at. It runs good, but the carb needs to be dialed in a little bit better ( still gets a little tire chirp when it goes into 2nd, though... ) At some point it started to nose over, and popping through the carb. Acting like it ran lean or running out of gas. And then it died. Giving it a little bit of time, and then doing a frantic dance on the throttle pedal got me a little bit down the road, before it died again. Trying to get out of the way of traffic enough while avoiding to put Arizona Pinstripes on my fresh paint was tricky ( Arizona Pinstripes are scratches in the paint from the sharp aggressive bushes we have here). I got it home, and the problem was a hose between the tank and the pump that had collapsed ( too tight a bend). After I replaced it with a longer one it ran a lot better. The truck is nice and quiet, except that there is a bit of exhaust droning ( Expected...), and a lot of wind/ buffeting noise coming from the RHS door ( Not Expected). I adjusted the door in a bit to get more clamping on the door seal, and built the A pillar up a bit with a couple of layers of Gorilla tape ( not a permanent solution, but to see what needs to be done for a more permanent fix, later. There is a Carshow I can go to in a couple of days, so we'll see how that goes...

There is a major issue with all of the pictures you have posted.......... I cannot hear it! I am guessing the new board editor must have removed the sound function Credit to you, that is sublime.

Now that the truck is done, I have to start thinking about the next project in line. Supercharged - Dry-sumped ........... Pinto - Automatic Now there's a combination that creates wonderment and confusion in equal measures. You just need to add Methanol

I just picked up a 3rd Powerglide. And I ordered 2 books on how to modify them. If I'm going to play with these, I have a lot to learn... Also, I'm talking to a company that makes racing torque converters to make me a special converter for this project. It will be a while before this build will start, but its nice to plan ahead and to have some of the puzzle pieces fall into place. ( parts collecting seems to go a lot better if you are not in a hurry).[/img] Aug 26, 2023 at 11:09am metalshapes said: Now that the truck is done, I have to start thinking about the next project in line. Message for HoTWire . I tried to send this as a P/M, but that no longer works. Hi. Since the switchover to the new layout I can no longer edit my posts. And I just tried to start a new buildthread, and it wont let me do that either. Talk to you later, Alex.
