While waiting for bits for the HotRod I couldn't help get stuck into YP, I've decided to attack the worst area first and go from there. I started by cutting the wing off and immediately realising this is going to be a whole world of hurt...  After some swears and head scratching I popped the door and windscreen off for safe keeping, although as I type this there is progress on securing the correct E mark screen.  Taking the door off did nothing to improve how this looks... there are apparently reinforcement panels behind the hinge bolt holes, they've disappeared and all! Fortunately as I posted earlier in this thread, I have a bulk head body cut I can pillage panels off, granted the replacement isn't perfect, but much less repair work than what I've currently got!  In true Blue Peter style, here's one I prepared earlier! I'll be peeling this off carefully and prepping the impossible to reach areas with paint before fitting too. The factory fitted tin worms need to be exterminated! I'll be bracing the shell and removing what's remaining of a post once I've all the repair panels prepped and ready. Braithwaite. |

Wow, you're a braver man than most, that's bad!! I think I've crossed that fine line between brave and stupid... Leapt enthusiastically over I'd say. On the upside, since you're planning on going the SVA (or separate chassis) route anyway you've plenty of options for extra bracing and whatnot without being restricted to trying to keep a points friendly monocoque. Not tempted to just go full tubular front end on it with a flip front and home built lower A pillars? |

Not sure I would want to subject an old Marina body to the sort of power being planned here!
Proper chassis is the only way to go be it ladder or spaceframe.

On the upside, since you're planning on going the SVA (or separate chassis) route anyway you've plenty of options for extra bracing and whatnot without being restricted to trying to keep a points friendly monocoque. Not tempted to just go full tubular front end on it with a flip front and home built lower A pillars? There is a plan and reinforcements will be added, I don't want to go too mad and make a huge space frame as I want this to look as factory as possible. But plans are a foot and I have the benefit of CAD, no not Cardboard Aided Design, the other CAD so can draw and mock stuff up to my hearts content. Tempted to leave it on leaf springs and add tramp bars just because I can though haha! |

Finally dug into the body cut and peeled the A post apart, there's rust to fix on the replacement but a damn sight less than on YP.   I'll brush all the rust off, weld up the holes and then paint everything in either Hammerite or weld through primer depending on what surface and whether it's getting welded or not. The odd shape panels are re-inforcement for the door hinges but don't have any drain holes if water gets in the windscreen A pillar and aren't painted on the surface against the outer skin. Pulling this apart has shown me why BL cars were so rust prone, THERE ARE A MILLION SMALL PANELS AND JOINTS!! Just make it out of one pressing for crying out loud! Evening all, Bit of an odd one but this forum is always coming up trumps for this kind of thing. Yes I have bigger issues than this buuuuuut I'm looking into front wheels/suggestions and could do with a mock-up set but can't seem to find anything I like for anything other than big money, or more than I'd be willing to spend on a set of mock up wheels. I did find some but think they're too wide and it'll be a toss up between the chassis rails clearing the engine or the tyres, I really want 18's all round as I've yet to see an Ital on anything bigger than 14" wheels and it'll give the car that Aussie look I'm after. I've tried a few online calculators but think it's pointless as I'll be doing a custom front suspension setup anyway. Here are some pics of examples, would like some people's thoughts as well. If anyone has anything they are looking to sell or would let me borrow, once I know specs I'm going to order some show wheels. I'll have off the shelf front alloys and steels when doing burnouts in case of an 'incident' that way they're easy to replace but need to find something that works first. MUST BE 5X114.3 PCD. Would love these as a genuine Australian wheel, but the 18" version looks too small because it's the 17 face with a stepped lip, not a flat one like the photo, Simmons FR-1's:  These are what I've been tempted by but are 18x8", although not made anymore a mate has some on his LS400 which looks so cool, Ultralite Evolves:  Then there's these, Lenso RS5's:  Super similar to FR1's but not quite and single piece instead of 3 piece. Nearly had a set bought but the seller has just disappeared off the face of the earth so calling them a bust. As I say, anyone with any ideas or inspiration please speak up, or I'll order the Ultralite's and make them fit.  Thanks all, Braithwaite. |

Turns out the body cuts were not as solid as I planned... So I used them as a template, still some finishing to do but I've now got one solid outer skin for the N/S A post!     As you can see, it's taken a fair few patches to make it that nice and have to do it all over again for the other side. IN OTHER NEWS THE DAY HAS BEEN SAVED!!!   E Marked and laminated Morris Ital windscreen! I was messaged by a gentleman who had read this thread and had this he was willing to sell, I am so chuffed and can't believe just how forth coming and helpful the RR community is, I wish I'd signed up years ago! I was super lucky to be offered it and is very IVA compliant, bar a slight delamination on the top passenger side, but it'll disappear under the rubber and a small sun stripe. |

Turns out a Small Block Chevy is a bit smaller on the internet...  Once the messing about stopped I wanted to line the engine up just to get a comparison... anyone got some fudging big shoe horns?! Can you use an electric water pump to save some room at the front. Surfing the water pump and front pulley would save almost a foot in length looking at that picture!
