to be honest I’m having so much more fun with the Ghia. Imagine all the fun You can have if You sell the 12er on and put the money into the ghia! Funny you should say that… I’m leaning towards spending a little of my savings for the 912 on the Ghia. In fact, I’ve just spent the first big $$$ spend on it. Removing these offending articles: For a set of these - new zero offset Empi 2 1/2” dropped spindles. It’s going to be tight, but should just work (as long as they are telling the truth about the zero offset!) Normal dropped spindles are coming in at $80, but I think it’s worth the extra to save some of the headaches.

Can i massively recommend a set of these Protech shocks. Worth every penny if you ask me. My link pin Bug is totally stock, not even lowered, but for a set of these things, an uprated front anti roll bar and radial tyres and it went from being pretty scary on anything other than a straight road, to the most well behaved Beetle I've driven. Feels like a modern car now. www.protechshocks.co.uk/(No, I don't work for them, despite being rather evangelical about the product!)

Wow! That’s pretty amazing. So much info, it’s going to take me a while to work through it. Thank you! I'm more about building a nice cruiser than a racer, but that sure makes you think. I’ll have a look at the protech shocks too. I have a weird feeling I bought some of their shocks for my old Subaru STi many years ago (though I could be wrong). If it was the same company, they were a dream to deal with. I had an issue with one shock and no quibble, they swapped it out. I have quite a few projects to do before I get there. I need to fix the shifter rattle, replace the T shifter. Fix the transmission anti rust device (oil spreader), get the carbs looked at by a guy down the road who is a wizard when it comes to setting up twin carbs… and more but it’s good to plan!

^^ Wow, that picture looks great! How did You do that? Seems reduced to four or five colors only, very comicbook styl-ish? Anyway, if You would want to go the german language route again, that hardly any NES will probably get, like in Kein 11: Niedrig is german for low. Decline it and You will say niedriger (= lower) and finally am niedrigsten (= (the) lowest). Take the second declination niedriger and mix it up with ghia: niedrighia. That's too many letters for a plate? Drop some vocals: NDRGHIA. I doubt someone will get this, sorry. Just my 2 cents. You (or others here) better play around with LO(W) + KG + (type) 14 a bit.

The picture editor took me hours… well an hour… well, ok perhaps a couple of minutes… I used this: You can see that there is a monthly subscription, but that’s just an option if you want to remove the company logo. Otherwise, there is a bit of a hidden ‘X’ at the top corner of the screen, so you can close the subscription page (that appears every time you use the app) and just use the app. Without a subscription, the app logo appears in the bottom corner. You can either trim it out, ‘erase’ it if you have an app that will do that, or just live with it. Thanks for all of the cool suggestions. Another German one would be fun to keep with the 912 theme. I like FLAT OUT as that reminds me of the old VW racer ‘Flat Attack’ that Keith Seume used to race. I also had the brainwave of ‘LOW GHIA’ while I was stuck in traffic on the way to work this morning. I think I can have up to 7 letters in Minnesota. Maybe 8, but 7 for sure. In other news, these arrived. Small steps towards the ground!

Went to a VW swap meet today. Some nice looking bugs about as well as a number of cool looking cars for sale. How about this 1 family owned grey bug for $7250 A number of big project bugs for sale as well, including 3 oval windows. This cool bug is owned by a local VW club member. Not sure about the stuff in the roof rack, but a nice looking bug. Not quite sure how paint jobs like this come about! And no prizes for guessing what I bought… Nothing!!! I’m saving up for a big spend item (and probably dipping into Porsche paint savings).

Doesn't Your 12er have hidden colors somewhere? Or was it always painted that blue? Yes, the 912 has two different colors of blue on it. I was more wondering how this came about: Did they leave the engine lid closed and just paint over it? Seems pretty wild!

I’d have that grey one in a heartbeat. Me too. Unfortunately, there is no room at the Inn for me. The wife would have killed me as well. Really lovely car though. If it wasn’t for the Ghia, it would be in my garage now!

For some reason, the Germans don't use 'Niedrig' when talking about cars, but 'Tiefe'.

Tiefe means depth, the adjective is tief (- tiefer - am tiefsten). A lowering job is Tieferlegung in german. Niederig is used for low amounts of several things. A coffee table is niedrig compared to Your dinner table. In dry summers many rivers carry Niedrigwasser, the opposite is Hochwasser. But -ger sounded more like ghia, so I chose that term.

Did they leave the engine lid closed and just paint over it? Seems pretty wild! Seems they did. Cheap paint job turned a light blue car red. This can often be seen in US tv series: whenever a CROWN vic shows up, the door shuts reveal a paint job.

Ha ha ha. Great German lesson. I did it in school but can remember very little - let alone the specifics of colloquial uses! I’ve always been pretty poor at languages - wish I had your talents! Had a long boring drive today. There is nothing like a US highway between cities to let you think a while! 65mph on a dead straight road, with nothing but the horizon to aim for and grassy meadows (full of water at the moment) to let you sit and contemplate the fuzz in you brain (and navel). When I got home I dug out a few photos from back when my VW obsession started. I think it began in 86. My first beetle was a true nightmare, so rotten and I’m sure the guy saw me coming. Cross plies and radials on the same axle, slipping, worn-out clutch, sleeping gas funneled into the car through the heat exchangers and a floor so rotten, you could push your fingers through it. The second written off by someone overtaking on a blind bend (while being chased by the police) and hitting me head-on. And of course, I was third party fire and theft and they had stolen the mk2 escort, so had no insurance. So on to beetle no.3 and as ever, trying to do a Cal look type bug on the cheap… I think this was around 88 or 89. A friend had some weller wheels from the back of his shed… no idea how old the tyres were, but they had tread. Another friend offered to weld in adjusters, if I took my beam to him. I then went to a scrap yard and pulled 2 short shock absorbers from something (mini???) and ran it with those. I’m sure they were ‘in tip top condition’ though. Look at the expensive axle stands I was using… The car did come with an interesting accessory… that I completely forgot about until I saw the photo again. And the seats were ‘pro-car’ seats, scavenged from another beetle. Still it got me around a little. I still have this T shirt from around the same time. I realised on my drive today, I’ve always tried to do my beetles as inexpensively as possible (due to a real lack of funding). Now it’s not so bad, so perhaps, I should actually make a car that drives nicely and looks good too and enjoy not having to chose between a car part and affording petrol to drive somewhere. You only live once and all that. Reliving your youth is a good thing right… or maybe it’s a late life crisis!

Haha, the typical reply from any native english speaker for excusing ones poor english speaking is probably: "Your english is better than my *insert any other language*."

Looks like we both started messing with VWs around the same time. My approach to learning German was more out of necessity, since i moved there. I wish I had done it at school!

I’m not sure if it’s lucky or not, but I’ve not been immersed in a language for long enough to really learn it. I work with teams in Germany (Hamburg and Berlin) and always try… and I have 4 native Japanese engineers working for me and two of my three bosses are also Japanese, so I try my best there as well. It’s also funny that when an aircooled VW gets under your skin around the tender pre20s, it seems to become a thing for life! Well it looks like the wheels won’t fit with a 2.5” drop. Whether the spindles truly are zero offset or otherwise, it clears until any type of bump or turn. Looks good though. So it’s going to be back to some 135 15R wheels to stretch over the 5.5 wide tires until I can get a narrowed beam!
