Here's a bit of a different one. A few years back I purchased the remains of a mostly wooden car body at a swapmeet. The 1950s pub story that comes with it is that the body was built in 1904 and fitted to an Innes, but not any Innes (there were up to 20 Innes badge cars sold between '03 and '06 or around there), the smaller of 2 Innes that drove from Sydney to Melbourne in the 1905 Dunlop Reliability Trial, the first big motoring trial in Australia. Since being pulled from a field in the 50s, showing signs of early body modifications and an engine swap, both probably pre-1915, it was removed from its chassis and running gear, the chassis used for a restoration/replica, and the body stored various places by various owners. I loved the shape of it and wanted to do something with it, so brought it home. I decided to build it into something that could have been built loosely pre 1920, as close to 1910 as practical. Something that could have been scrounged from junkyard parts around that era. To do so I scavenged a rough Ford TT chassis, removed the crossmembers and spaced it out to suit the body. I have a real soft spot for the Willys Overland 91 quirky suspension, so dragged home a very rough chassis to remove the crossmembers and springs (which I plan to reverse for something completely unique) as well as the steering column and rear axle. I traded some parts for a suitable front axle and hubs, and currently have a '28 Chev motor, although I am still on the lookout for something much earlier. Currently parts are loosely sitting together, however in the last week I have begun to CAD model what I have and play around with it to get proportions right and get an understanding for what will need to be fabricated.      |

This looks fantastic. What software did you use to model the body? Modelled in Solidworks Thanks everyone, this won't be a quick project, but I will certainly keep you updated. The biggest 2 things for me for now are finding the right motor and working out if I am keeping the rear one, as they are going to define suspension and crossmember details. |

Slight updates on the Innes. I know the Morris motor is too modern (when did the sidevalve Morris start getting used? Morris 8?) but the proportions are good so I may use it for mockup. I've finally made a very small start on the frame. Rails have had a little taken off the back to sit flush with the back of the body and have been spaced correctly with some temporary braces. I tried a couple of crossmembers from scrap I had but wasn't happy with them, so have now sourced scrap front and rear sections from a Ford Model T frame which will be used to make more genuine looking ones. Just need to find a couple of spare days for some cutting and welding.   |

Glad to see this has resurfaced, was wondering where it went to.
That engine appeared in it's first guise in 1935, though that one appears to be a later version from a Minor (49-52 ish).
Putting that in would make it quite radical. You'd better think hard about brakes.

Thanks. I am trying to keep pre 20ish or at least versions of things that are pre-20ish, but maybe it can stay until I find something more suitable. So long as you're good with Babbitted bearings, splash lubrication and thermo-siphon cooling you should be good. From what I read that engine there is very modern for '35, with insert bearings and improved metallurgy. With 27 horsepower it should be pretty sprightly and to the untrained eye, not look out of place. |

Similar construction to my Pontiac engine, though magneto ignition rather than points/coil. Very low revving, redline about 2500rpm. Typical of the era, due to taxation reasons. Tiny bore (2.5" to 2.75"), long stroke (4.4"). 2.3 or 2.5 litre with 36 to 43 hp depending on size. Pressure oiling, they don't say how much of the engine is pressure fed though. Knowing Leonard Lord, all bearings. Quite an increase in weight for a 28% power increase over the Minor engine. |

That should sound alright though- those have that poppity poppity note at idle which turns into the proper flathead playing cards in bike spokes type noise.
But with that engine you're getting close to it being a sand racer rather than a roadster.
