"Swirly finish" on machined components.... I served my time at Crabtree of Gateshead, building printing presses. A part of the machine... Ink duct blade... was a long strip of spring steel and, after being peen rivitted to its cast iron backbone, it was finished with that swirl >> the fitter stuck a piece of Emery tape in a forked rod and laboriously tagged his way along - with an air drilling machine - replicating the pattern. Took a while!!! OVIMOR Crabtree, that rings a bell, Karl Watkin and the management buyout making them all rich?

Today I have been listening to The Doors, but first a quick message from our sponsors. (puts on a deep, slightly American accent) "NORMFEST Oxim ULTRA, The rostloserspray, that really rostles loose." Joking aside this stuff is pretty good, far better than WD40 at penetrating rusty screws, and if you order it from carparts4less rather than ECP its £4 odd a 400ml tin instead of £6, and you can still pick it up from your local ECP store or have it delivered. Yesterday I stripped the dash and got completely carried away, forgetting to take pics until I was finished, and then I only took a pic of the mystery switch pack I got with it. Thanks to the RR brain trust, it was identified as fiat 850 sport coupe. Don't think I will be using those. Today as I mentioned earlier I was listening to the doors, and they were making a sort of crunchy sound. This is the better one of the two, the only thing holding the door skin on this one was one small bolt of the door handle The good news is it looks like not only is the door glass good (I still have to wash it to check), but they also have yielded a good pair of quarter lights and glass channels, some door furniture a black door card and most of a door skin. Dan PS luckily I haven't finished the door, because the glass is a different shape to a herald, the winder mech must also be attached differently do many documenting pics will be taken first.

Those switches are worth money to the right person The right person is welcome to message me with an offer before they appear on eBay, as I have no use for them.

Any way, so. Back in the mists of time a man, no, this man started a project he was destined to never finish, the future looked herald pick up shaped and burbled (to the tune of 8 of Rover's finest cylinders) quite a lot. As part of that future, he was preparing a bulkhead that looked very like this which had been purchased for said project, yet when it came back from the blasters it looked even less shiny, but alas more like a colander, [img src="https://img.retro-rides.org/i/v/logicaluk/f8c594ced79d.jpg" alt=" " ] Which, altho great by Herald and Vitesees standards, was a bit more rust than was originally hoped for. The future now looked like a resonable amount of work. Then this much guc and seam sealant was removed. New tools and supplies were purchased But when the gutters were removed, much rot was detected But judicious use of a drill and angle grinder tided it up. It was cleaned up taped off, given 2 coats of hydrate80 and a coat of weld through primer as per industry standards, a cad template was created and transferred in to steel (As you may or may not know, this man has a fox word back, which causes a ridiculously huge pile of pills to be consumed every day just so he can carry out normal day-to-day operations.) The previous flourish of work was done after the first injection in his back was done, and life was back to normal. The next day, as final fit up was commencing, the fox word back returned....... It sat being looked at, In bursts and walked straight past, regarded as some kind of bad luck charm, with only minor projectetts being done near it, for 8 months it sat biding its time waiting showing its displeasure by acquiring a small amount of surface rust. But as I said, that was all for a future that nearly happened but didn't, because well, if you have read any of the preceding pages, or in fact are actually here, reading this very text, you know already.

Having stared at the bloody thing for long enough, I took definite action, and bought a pair of Chick Doig's very well-made HERALD VITESSE FRONT BULKHEAD BODY MOUNTING A POST FLOOR ASSEMBLIES Which were also stared at for some time. Then a kindly friend came to visit and after being plied with a mug of Yorkshire's fines tea did what real friends do, and helped out. He dialled in the welding plant, that experance showed me that My welding mask is totally and absolutely fox pictured, My plan of how to proceed on this side was basically sound and will work But the other floor pan is not worth the work and better off getting cut out and replaced, not what i wanted to hear, but after looking at it, the £120 invesment in another one of Chick's panels will be well worth it.

Think the early type was a neater design. But bookmarked this. the GT is neater yes, but doesn't have the presence of the 4s and the back end of the GT with no boot opening is kind of cute but, doesn't work for me the GT4s has the number plate raised from the tail light line doesn't quite work, for me, but this s due to the need for a boot handle, But I love the cam tail. Sorry but have to agree that, front and rear, I prefer the "earlier" model purely from an aesthetic perspective, Nigel

This looks like great project and look forward to seeing where it goes. A colleague's Dad has a beautiful red example and was amazed when I knew what it was! Not sure if you are looking for ideas about the number plate location, but the 2 litre version with the more angular bodywork had it mounted below the rear bumper and had one piece rear lights. Could provide some ideas? www.simoncars.co.uk/bond/equipe2.html

Isn't it great we can all have different opinions here, without argument or drama, for that I thank you HoTWire

The roofline on the earlier one is bloody awful though ain’t it? It looks like a badly done DIY roof chop full of filler. I couldn’t live with the car for that alone, later one has a way better side profile especially in the 1/4 window and c pillar area.
Tbh cars like this are usually always a victim of overly fussy or large lighting/badging/handles/trim because they just use donor bits off other cars they could get hold of. Choose those carefully and you can clean up the lines of this thing no end.

mx5 mk1 or no door handles at all would certainly help clean it up.

Seeing as I've liked pretty much every build you do I'd be interested in your input DezOk, well… The front indicator/sidelight units are too big and too clunky. Very easy to eliminate them altogether there days and incorporate them into the other light units. Cut the centre bar out of the grill and have a full width tube grille. This visually widens and shortens the front of the car, helping the proportions a lot. Front bumper. Entirely get rid of the front number plate plinth and rebuild the valance behind it, have the bumper blade running straight through, and mount the plate below like the earlier ones. This will have a similar effect to the grille mods. Continuous full width lines= lower and wider. I’d also get a plate made 10% smaller to help the visuals. Yeah it’s naughty but the chances of getting caught on something like this are slim. Moving to the rear, the raised plate mount and light boss do nothing for the back of the car, in fact they detract from the nice little ducktail it has going on. I’d smooth them up ff altogether and have an infill panel of either black or brushed alloy that goes out to that obvious line there, and mount the no. Plate lights at each end. Will look kinda 240z-ish. Also, triple lights is far too busy for a car that size. Id go down to doubles or even single larger multifunction jobs (mk1 Tina maybe?) mounted on the body only and loose the ones on the tailgate. The side profile doesn’t really need much, there’s not a lot you could do without major, major work. Maybe add a chrome sill trim, again more visual length.

mx5 mk1 or no door handles at all would certainly help clean it up. triumph door handles push on a plate in the door, i shal have to investigate if a handle swap is possible kevin Dez Not so much food for thought as a banquet. I shall cogitate and digest and will respond later as it's too late to go through all that right now, and I'm at work at 6. Dan

Quick ten minute restyle, a la Dez. The wider grille makes the front end look much less "pinched". I'd also see if there are some bigger wheels that would fit, with lower profile tyres I guess.
