Back when I worked for the water board, we used to give out citric acid crystals for people to put in their washing machines after rusty plop from the mains had gotten in and stained their white sheets. I think somewhere like Wilko's sell it for cleaning washing machines too. Might be worth a go?

Oof, that windscreen surround. I know that one! If you can dig out my thread on my old Bond I documented how I replaced the entire surround from the top of the bulkhead upwards.
Apparently the Equipes rust worse than Heralds there because they stripped all the rustproofing out at the factory to aid fibreglass bonding when installing the roof.

Yet another tiny update, as I'm currently struggling to change the clutch on my sons 08 Mini. Thanks to zeberdee I have a VW T4, grill the lower grill has almost exactly the correct curvature to match the bumper, at least the part behind the numberplate.  Dan |

Not been on here for a while and just been having a catch up...... Mounting the number plate below the bumper? Mine used to scrape the ground when opening the bonnet till I adjusted the hinges, it only clear's now with precious little space and that's on the original mount...... Hate to be a killjoy but might be an idea to have a check before going any further bodyworkwise.... Good luck Pete   Not mine but get the idea |

Oxalic acid often sold as a wood bleach or patio cleaner is also an excellent rust remover.

Apparently the Equipes rust worse than Heralds there because they stripped all the rustproofing out at the factory to aid fibreglass bonding when installing the roof. Originally the roof was bolted to the top of the windscreen surround not fibreglassed, a piece of guttering was worked in with the fibreglass then bolted to the surround with a rubber seal. Mine was shot also but fortunately managed to get a good replacement guttering from the spitfire graveyard at Sheffield (Who was breaking approx one a month at the time) it came with a bit of the roof still attached, this was removed, cleaned up and fibreglassed to my roof then rebolted back up, with a good replacement seal which was chucked in with the guttering, luckily the top of my bulkhead was in good nick. For a bit of belt and braces I masked up and went over the rubber with some "Tiger seal". A new windscreen seal was fitted and It's been out in all weather's with no leak's. A couple of pic's of mine plus a couple from one that's just sold on E Bay which look's to be starting with the same disease though not as far advanced, still managed to make £4,400 though        |

Yes I spotted the green one on eBay, I recon that's hidding more rot than its showing.
Luckily my bond is an early one with no front gutter, which I prefer the look of.
I need to go find my mojo, I'm not feeling at all inspired at the moment.

All Equipes apart from the 2 litre covertible were built with a front gutter, any without will have rotted away and been repaired minus the header rail as it's called, and impossible to get hold of. Nothing to do with age or luck

I wouldnt be too down on the mojo. You know what you're dealing with at least and grasping the problem is usually half of the challenge. I find a list and some supplies is usually enough to kick start me into action anyway. That and hopefully some warmer weather on its way to you!

I'm getting there, the next purchase is a floorplan from chic doig at £140, I'm saving up for it, I've managed to fill my workshop with car parts so there's no room in there, but I'm working my way through it. But there is hope for my mojo, I've done the clutch on my son's r56 mini cooper, I've even pulled Frank out of storage for the first time in 4 years.

Another small update, more parts have been collected, a stainless exhaust back box and some stainless pipe for £10 & a pair of used K&N filters for £25, Picked up at a car show. 2 Pairs of MX5 seats, one pair heated from a mate.  And a stag fuel filler  That, when paired with a spitfire fuel tank, should fit here  |

Ive been collecting more bits for the bond, and today i had an hour for a poke and prod. first this was to remove the wiring loom, wow there was a string of screw in lamps just hung under the dash,  I have no idea how they were held in place, or if they were insulated, they were connectedbodged on to the instrument lights. I found 4mm 7 solid core earth wire in the loom,  along with coax going in to the doors and 1mm solid core bell wire  Bizarrely it was all taped and looked quite nice, the PO had even moulded fibreglass tubes around the cable holes to stop the edges of the bulkhead chafing on the cables and then stuffed the holes with some kind of non-setting putty. That all had to come out to see if this would fit.  It's a Mk4/1500 spitfire heater blower, I think it will fit, that would allow me plenty of room to move the engine backwards.
