Anyone with experience of the above? Car is a 1.8 k series, 04 plate Loud whine consistent with road speed, quieter above around 40mph, but no vibration? Would have expected a vibration of some sort? Also a quiet chattering occasionally which sounds like a loose headshield, but isn't? I know these are supposed to be a weak point in these Approximately 110k Tia

Just a thought , before you go to deep .
Are the tyres ok ? No uneven wear , feathering etc ??
I ask as we had a noise like this some time ago & after replacing numerous things , it turned out to be tyre noise .

I did ask them to check the tyres (not my car) but neither owner is particularly savvy. It's coming over on Saturday so I can check it, and the VCU, so I'll have a look then Cheers for your reply 👍

Mk1 Freelander suffer with the rear propshaft bearings failing. And even new ones failing in short time frames if not a genuine one The massive lump in the middle of the propshaft is a viscous coupling, and they are known to come apart too

Mk1 Freelander suffer with the rear propshaft bearings failing. And even new ones failing in short time frames if not a genuine one The massive lump in the middle of the propshaft is a viscous coupling, and they are known to come apart too Thanks, I've recently changed the entire rear shaft because of the bearings, I haven't tested the VCU, it was ok when I fitted it about 4 months ago, but that's another on the list. It's the lack of vibration that's confusing me I have found a description on how to overhaul a VCU yourself, and since I've got two more that's something else I might look at, with all the time I don't have! Thanks for replies guys

Ok small update Car arrived today, nsr tyre is on the wear bars, osr has about 6mm tread, so I swapped to the spare VCU I fitted about 6 months ago is fine (phew!) But on roadtest, rear diff is whining, still the heat shield style rattle, grumble/whine from IRD, SRS light is on, intermittent EML and it's also due a cambelt....... TL:DR it's scrap, time to buy something else! Cheers for input all
