Hi guys. Got the offer of a very cheap 300 merc to get rid of, dismantle, etc. I’d like to use the engine in an ‘89 Range Rover with the auto box and would be happy with the standard hp output (170ish) and have had a look around and there are options but would like some first hand experience of said swap and what’s involved ? Realise theres no text book or manual wrote for this but some people will have done this, be it to another box and would just appreciate a bit of feedback/ knowledge.
TIA hopefully

We have a very old 70's OM617 3L 5 cylinder in a 60's Land Rover, Its sluggish and slow but always starts, pulls like a train and does double the original Land Rover diesels MPG Go for it I believe there is a Face book group?

It will come in handy even if you never use it

You'll have the electronic pump on your OM606, so you'll need a mechanical pump from an OM603 found in the W124, W126 and non-UK W140. My friend did on OM606 conversion into a Rangie, although he used a Mercedes auto box. From memory I think he used a rear-bowl sump (W210 OM606 comes with front bowl). There are various other bits you'll need to do to make the 606 work in the Rangie, such as converting the turbo actuator, but once you delve into the world of conversions you'll figure out a list. I'm converting my Nissan Patrol to OM606, but I made my own adaptor as there's not one off the shelf. Diesel Pump UK (www.dieselpumpuk.com) are a great resource for conversion parts and have quite a few helpful videos on Youtube. www.k2designandfabrication.co.uk also have various conversion parts. I've seen adaptor kits for the manual R380, but not the auto box... might require some investigation, I'm certain it has been done before! If you do Facebook there are various groups including one specifically for Land/Range Rover OM606 conversions which has a lot of helpful members. It's definitely worth doing - I know at least 5 people with OM606s in various retros and they're fantastic!

Thanks guys. Have been doing a bit of reading and looking how people have gone about this. Not really needing colossal power and would be fine running the standard pump, the elephant in the room being the immobiliser and associated wiring. The merc was taken off the road due to gearbox issues (auto lost drive) and was parked up but never got round to. It’s not been started for a good while but last time tried was a no go due to immobiliser (flat battery for too long ??) Anyway it’s for penny’s really so will get it and see if I can get it started and go from there. Any ideas on immobiliser bypass or can the ecu be worked on by someone in the know ? Obviously not wanting it posted on here but maybe it’s doable ?

Have a poke around on superturbodiesel.com if you haven’t already.
Google mercedes de immo or Mercedes Julie imobilizer. Also auto box might be as simple as contactor plates but I guess you aren’t using merc box?

People do the manual pump job to get rid of the problematic immobiliser setup as much as to make power.
You use the sprinter box to manualise them.
If I keep my transit recovery truck l’ll be doing it. There’s a couple out there that have been done, and they shift.

Do it!
Luke at DPUK will be able to advise about an adapter kit if you want to keep the range rover gearbox, if not you could always use the gearbox out of an ML270. That will bolt up to the 606 easily and keep your 4wd.
Forget playing with the merc ecu, it's more agro than you think to get that to play ball. You need a manual injection pump from a OM603 or a non turbo OM606, then have the pump upgraded by Luke. Or just buy one direct from him. That should give you 200ish hp.
The stock turbo just needs the actuator converting to a normal pressure type and it's good to go.
The rear bowl sump comes from the OM613 cdi engine, along with a few other parts to make it work.
Just be wary of the rest of your driveline, 606's make alot of grunt and will easily destroy any weak parts.

Thanks guys for the input. Have been a little distracted by a wr400 I bought recently. Interesting reading about the Julie option as I don’t really need more than 170 on a standard car, in fact it would be plenty having drove it in asthmatic 3.5 flavour for a while. Spoke to a guy recently who’s done one into a 110 with his own mounts etc and said he didn’t bother with the sump change as he doesn’t off road it. Plenty clearance. He’s bringing it down so I can have a look around it when he gets a minute. On the back burner until spring now really but if anyone wants to chip in, please do.
