So we're trying something a little new, a kind of chat/show and tell thing. More tell this week than showing of pictures or videos, but that will come in the future.
What do you reckon? Good idea/bad idea?

Enjoyed that, thanks Not posted in a while because I’ve been mixed up in the sort of stuff you alluded to, ‘98-‘04 cheap stuff that i consider to be not RR material. Been messing about with VW Lupos, which I think are quite interesting in that they are like Beetles in the 90s. An older car, still loads of them trundling around, have a whole ‘scene’ for younger people but also are still driven by the whole age spectrum it seems, but they are still cheap, some of the niche models are zooming up in price (GTi models for example). I’ve been told that they all get modified in the same way, but that could be said about the Beetle scene I guess (though I haven’t seen a Baja Lupo ) But as you said, they’ve been out of production for 16 years, came with tape players and to younger people they are old cars (the newest ones are older than Tom, who is I guess, the next generation of modified/ retro car owners)

Been messing about with VW Lupos I think Lupos are already cult classics and as you say have that whole scene around them. I think them and K11 Micras occupy a really good space right now where you can have a cool car inexpensively with enough retro credentials to get by in the retro scene.

When I first read this thread title thoughts naturally went straight to Rootes products..
Hmmm, 50's Sunbeam Rapier on a Boxster floorpan, re-badged as a Singer Nuneaton.

On a related thought, could a Porsche engine fit a Singer Chamois?

On a related thought, could a Porsche engine fit a Singer Chamois? Everything fits with a 10 pack of disks and a large enough hammer..... P.

A very interesting, insightful and agreeable post.
The days of £10k 944 Turbos went many years ago. They are arguably more desirable than the S2 versions, principally for the extra power, and ease of power extraction (300BHP is around £1k on those to get), in addition to the halo Turbo S model, as well as the race series for them.
The Turbo vs. S2 debate is one that has been in the 944 circles for years. The Turbo folks love the way the power just comes in with a massive bang, especially when tuned up, while the S2 folks will take about it being the smooth operator, and it being pure. I think I prefer the Turbo.
The age thing is something I hinted on with my ST220 thread and previous cars I had on here, relative to the time period. I think, at least for me, the reasons why they seem "new" to us is -Our own age -Disinterest in newer cars. I like a few new cars, but certainly not as many when I was younger. The type of cars I like has changed. Audis don't do alot for me, but something like an Alpine A110 does. So for a daily, -Lack of changes from the 00s to now. OK, some cars look dated from there now, but compare the change in progress from the late 80s to the early 00s, and compare that to say cars from the 00s to now.
The biggest problem I'm finding with 80s to 00s cars is spares availability. There are many coolant hoses which are now NLA for my ST220 along with drivetrain parts, and B5.5 Passats are now no longer supported for many parts from VW ; they sold whatever stock they had specifically for B5.5s as 'low runners' cheaply a few years ago. BMW seem to be the exception to the rule here, but they have always supported older cars. Merc come a close second IME.
Maybe this is why classic prices have gone up. Minis are silly money now IMHO for what they are, albeit I still want one, but MGBs, while rising, are still relatively sensible. But I've done them before, so they are not for me now.
00s cars and 90s where they appeal seem to be the sweet spot for now for me, but even in there, there are pockets of cars which have risen in price alot lately. One of them which I now own I doubt I'd be able to buy today for what mine has done to it.
The main reason for why secondhand cars overall have gone up recently is the semiconductor issue. Working in the industry, it's very troubling, and worrying. Not just for the brands, but for their suppliers who have seen empty order books during the initial lockdown. It has come in handy for those selling, who don't need to buy. It probably will last for around a year.
