As if I didn't have enough little projects on the go, with 2 compressors in bits and a new shed to build, I figured I'd like a non working old foot pump. A pcl emperor mk2. Apparently what the AA used to carry? Nice brass body, heavy steel frame, and a cast aluminium base unlike the cast iron bases of earlier pumps. Doesn't move any air right now but it's presumably just leather seals inside like normal, so I'll strip it and make new seals. I have been meaning to get a foot pump for years as it's annoying not having one, but modern ones are junk so I'd never given in and bought one. Hopefully this will prove a more reliable tool!

I guess the big decision is do inleave it as is, or polish the body and paint the frame.

Hi, Buy another one and then have one done each way. It seems to be your M.O. Because one is none and two is one. Colin

Had a little look at why if's not pumping. Took the top pivot out, spring off, pump piston out. Came apart pretty easy. Looks like no fasteners have been touched before. It's never been oiled and by the looks of it, it's hardly been used. The one way valve is in the piston head and air comes up through the piston shaft. Means there is only 1 seal in the thing which does anything. No need for shaft seals etc. Inside isn't full of gunk, it looks new! Seal looks new and is supply. I opened it out a little, put it back in, and it pumps! I'll oil the seal, clean, polish and paint it, and put it into use. I'm over the moon with its condition considering it was a blind eBay purchase.

Open the seal out? How will you do that? I have an old vertical pump that needs similar looking at...although it was my grandas, so knowing him I imagine it's been apart and fettled plenty before!

It's a leather parachute seal. It's cupped so as it tried to push air, the seal sides are pushed harder into the cylinder wall. There is about 10mm of side wall on the seal so I just pulled it open a bit.
