Morning all. With all the panic buying of fuel, it occurred to me that the 200tdi in my daily will run quite happily on a diesel/veg oil mix, at a ratio of about 40/60 Anyone have a preference for a particular type? I've heard that rapeseed oil is better, but no reason as to why And also sticking a bottle of 2 stroke oil in with each tank fill, worthwhile or snake oil? TIA

I use good quality mineral 2 stroke in my van, the emissions this year were unreadable on the mot test. The van has had the DPF gutted so no filtration media.

Any vegetable oil, whatever is cheapest. I used to put some 2 smoke oil in years ago but didn't seem to make a difference.

Well as I mentioned in a thread a while ago, , there was an issue at my MOT when the system flagged up that it was considerably cleaner than last year! So emissions isn't the main goal. Some sites claim that by using or sunflower oil, you'll gum up the oil, with others claiming that's nonsense🤔

As for the dpf you'd have to cut it open to see it was hollow, it's wrapped from the turbo outlet to the end of the dpf.

TIA Don't use new chip shop type oil as it has an anti foaming agent that will destroy your engine, used filtered stuff is fine. You can go 100% veg oil but I think you need an inline heater. The other thing is to have a supply of diesel filters as veg oil will completely clean the fuel system out and block the filters within weeks. A friend used to make 100% vegoil but he mixed alcohol with it, I think Acetone but I could be wrong, others suggest methanol. Even on diesel in my old Disco I found the lower bit of the tank pickup pipe in the swirl pot would block with a slimy sludge and if it ran low on derv the engine would cut to a tickover until I could top up enough to cover the upper hole which doesn't have a valve on it.

Rapeseed and sunflower oil are marginally less viscous than veg oil so technically better. It will all work tho! Palm oil tends to be the worse as it will gel at low temperatures so avoid that.

Does a dose of derv in there prevent the gelling issue or is it purely heat?

Thanks for replies all, things seem to be easing round here so hopefully won't be an issue, but it's a backup plan if needed 👍
