My son wants us to replace the 1300cc in his Escort Mk4 with a Zetec over the Christmas break. Now this will be my first fwd Zetec conversion so any advice would be helpful, Is it worth buying a complete mk5/mk6 Escort to use as a donor? Silvertop or blacktop? (Have been offered a cheap blacktop) Could we use his 5 speed 1300 box? Which flywheel/clutch? Engine mounts etc? Thanks in advance

If you are getting the whole car with a Zetec, I'd be inclined to use that vehicles flywheel/clutch/gearbox setup Unless the mk4 is a 4 speed I have a suspicious that the FWD Fords of that era have the same gearbox, its the bellhousing and gear ratios that vary. Also, with the complete car you can also use the complete EEC IV management too

If you can live with a 1.6 zetec the best place to start would be an escort mk7. They use the same IB5 gearbox whose heritage goes right back to the first fiestas, with this the driveshafts and rod shift will be a straight swap, the main thing you will have to sort out is engine and gearbox mounts, I seem to remember they both used 2 mounts front and rear under the gearbox but no idea if they are interchangeable.
You could then use the zetec escort wiring (stripped of the circuits you don't need) and ECU but you will need to incorporate the PATS transponder and key, you will also need to get a high pressure fuel system in there, either a xr3i tank and pump (later EECIV) or a lift pump and swirl pot added to what you have.
the rest is just basic plumbing of coolant hoses, exhaust and air intake.
