Morning all. A few on here may be familiar with my C15D/ Tansport for London aggro…….it’s tempted me to look at a ‘new’ van. I run a small mobile(I collect and deliver) cycle business and can’t be off the road without a van, and until TfL have come to their senses/fined me thousands of pounds I’m not risking the C15, plus it is fairly tired Id like a Citroen, it’s a problem I have, and have just realised that there’s a PETROL 1.4 Berlingo van! Perfect! They all seem to have done a lot of miles, I’m fine with that, it’s a van Are there any issues to look out for? Cam belt? Overheating? Advice and knowledge always appreciated

Good little engines, same as Peugeot 206, C3 etc, watch for head gasket, or oil leaking from the cam belt end of the engine which is also usually due to the head gasket. replaceing the head gasket is actually well easy , new gasket is about 15 quid and you don't need to change any other gaskets, replace cam belt at same time, i usually just take the whole intake manifold and injectors off with the head, and leave the exhaust manifold on the exhaust. anyhow, cable cluch unfortunately on the petrol models, they also fitted a 1.6 16v in the multispace sometimes, not sure if they put them in the panel van ever. you could of course get a multispace then it gives you twin side doors, a lift up tailgate instead of barn doors, and a back seat. i would expect demand for petrol (ULEZ) vans to be soaring right about now. Berlingos don't seem to rust, they are very comfortable, with good visibility, and good ride quality, brakes, steering and gearbox. Electrics can be a bit weak, check the heater blower works, the lcd display, and that the indicator stalk isn't too sloppy .

They like to chuck a torsion spring on the rear axle, it's generally cheaper to replace the axle than try to remove and replace the offending item.

they can rust, especially the older ones, but typically only if they've had some damage on the sills.
axles don't "chuck a spring", the needle roller bearings wear into the surface of the shaft, this allows a little play and water gets in, then it turns into a grinding paste, you get that notorious PSA camber
it is something to look out for, but not as known for it as the smaller vehicles like the 106, 306, its a much sturdier unit first used on the 405.
look out for grumbly gearboxes, the 1360cc engines all use the MA unit, later 1598cc 16v used a BE4 box, much much sturdier, but as mentioned possibly only found in the facelift Multispace.
rear seats of the multispace come out easily though, my Mother has used one for many years carrying bikes around, it came with blacked out rear windows, has the bonus of sliding doors to enable maximum tat loading LOL

I currently have 8 Berlingos, I am slightly embarrassed by that. 2 are for sale , 3 are electric ones which don't work , 2 are just spares ones, and and i'm keeping one for the road.

Sorry for the digression, my 205 seems to have an 1.9 diesel turbo which was apparently shoehorned in, from a scrapped Berlingo. If anyone has any useful bits to get rid of, power steering is of interest as well, cheers It goes well though!

I know someone with a Ph1 camper variant and that got me looking for a Ph1 Multispace but never found one with a/c. I'm sure they aren't rare but I never found one near me so gave up. Really useful, durable little wagons.
