as title really, about 3 week ago I bought a pug 207, the reg document came back in my name the same week, online on dvla is still showing as taxed until feb 2022
its currently off the road while I do some jobs on it, I havent sorned it, because if its still showing as taxed and if I insure it for a few hours or a day for testing, it will help!
has there been a mistake somewhere, or what? or has the last owner just not cancelled his DD for the tax?

Pretty sure you need to SORN it or tax it as per the law, the previous owner will then automatically get a refund.

Might still be taxed in previous owners name , it no longer transfers over to the new owner

Once the V5C is processed by the DVLA the tax is automatically cancelled and the new keeper has to either tax or SORN it.

Its probably a mistake by DVLA. I've recently though the Post Office been able to Tax an MOT expired but exempt car(ongoing with DVLA). If you do SORN it online you won't be able to do anything online again for 5 days.

Here for a good time, not a long time. But long enough for a 12 month MOT anyway.

Pretty sure you need to SORN it or tax it as per the law, the previous owner will then automatically get a refund. You would think they would. But they don't. I had a write off, and sent off the log book as per the instructions. For a full year I was insuring the vehicle (because I'm curse word with money and hardly ever check bank statements), wasn't until I rang the DVLA to ask what was going on I got told they hadn't received the V5 thing from me. The car had been since brought back on to the road, and was taxed and being driven, and the DVLA allow the one vehicle to be taxed twice by two different people. So be aware of that, the fact that someone else is taxing the vehicle doesn't cancel the tax you've put on it, and doesn't flag to the DVLA that the ownership has changed either.

Similar to above, when I bought my Ovlov it showed as being SORN'd. Got a chase letter saying tax it or SORN it, so went online and tried to redo it, and it wouldn't let me (said it was already SORN'd). Then got another chase letter, finally got through to the DVLA and they said it was because of an IT issue.
In short, yeah it's an error with the DVLA.

so around a month later from my opening post and with the car repaired and tested as much as i'd like, I thought I would sorn it until my current car is sold and then I can put this pug on road with the tax in my name, its obvious the last owner hasnt told them or cancelled a DD, and it hasnt been done automatically for some reason. today, I get a refund payment cheque! certainly strange. its in my name, so I will have to put it in my bank!

What jgtr said. Basically, they don't always remove the previous person's tax off. Only way to do it is to make the car SORN.

That is odd!
What I was meant to say was if the tax is on a DD, cancel the DD at the bank’s End
