Anyone any ideas why this has been done? Someone has cut grooves into the head near the valves? Tookhead today to get it checked and he said never seen it before and defo not factory. This is around all 4 cylinders..  |

'Singh' grooves which allegedly improve combustion with high compression ratios. The definitely introduce stress razors in a highly thermally stressed area.
I'd get the head crack tested before reusing.

Iam wanting to use this head on my turbo build anyone known if it will be ok. Not sure if to look for a new head. I've been reading up on the grooves making things worse.

My gut feeling is that it’ll be no good with boost .
Could cause hot spot’s , leading to pre det .

This is what I was fearing with me wanting to boost this engine. I might try and sell this its ashame as it's a new head, inside is mint. Cheers for the help guys.

Can you not grind away that area and lose the grooves? Not sure you could anyone know.? You could , but that would change the combustion chamber size & shape . This could lead to a poor flame path & more issues . I’d go with a standard head if it was mine , your not dealing with any unknowns then , or chasing possible strange symptoms . |

Yeah in a boosted application id be tempted to replace the head, or machine that out for some compression lowering. Definitely want smooth edges/bowl to reduce hot spots and detonation in that setup.

Iam running low compression pistons for the build I may take it to machine shop and ask how much to machine it out to remove the grooves.

I'd be tempted to smooth the grooves out so they're a wavy pattern and try it.

Grind out grooves,alloy weld and re skim,seen worse due to corrosion :-)
