Hi All, I've been looking for one of these for a while now, This recently caught my eye, It's definitely a little "pimped" up but basically has everything I'm after, Lots of jobs to do on it but it'll be a while before I can start, Nigel,

When I first got this I was aware that there were a number of issues / faults with it, The first was an incorrect E46 steering wheel which when I actually checked was not only disconnected but was also cracked on the trim part, It has been replaced with a correct E39 wheel, It was also fitted with a naff Sony head unit, (again, not connected, do we have a theme starting here so soon ??) located in an equally naff plastic surround, replaced with : These tasks were undertaken while waiting for service parts etc, Please forgive 'phone pictures, Nigel

I meant to also add yesterday, what sort of DH uses superglue to attach items onto the top of the dashboard ?? (Mind you, like the black mastic in the engine bay there's evidence of superglue being used a lot !!) So if anyone knows of a sensibly priced black dash in the Portsmouth area, please give me a shout, Nigel,

Would super-glue disolver "detatch" gel be worth a try before replacing the dash? Unless it melts the dash of course - but I doubt it.

OAY842F, I was going to try some sort of solvent when I thought they were held on with some sort of mastic, Unfortunately when taking them of a piece of dash top came off with it so it's fubbarred,

Shame about the bodges, but that's a great looking car, not a big fan of aftermarket wheels but those do suit it a lot.
Look forward to watching it's / your progress.
Cheers,
Andy

Cerbsp6, I have to be honest and say I wasn't sure myself when I first got it, (funny because I've always liked 5 spoke wheels,) but they've grown on me, Nigel

A fast disappearing car these, and they are cracking motors.
I think wd40 is used to deal with superglue, worth a go?

Looking good. The E39s on here are multiplying! Bookmarked Normally I buy a car and start seeing them everywhere. Even the with the 944 there were a few local ones I'd see regularly. Since driving the e39 for a few months I've seen only two others on the road - where have they all gone?!

Well, I said that one of the previous owners had a love affair with black mastic, I knew it needed a new air flow meter as the only way she would run was with the AFM disconnected, took the airbox off for ease of access and the damaged AFM was held in with tie wraps and what most have been close to a full tube of black mastic ?? Dug it all out to find it was totally the wrong air box !! The aperture for the AFM was approximately 2 cm too large, luckily I had an M50 engine airbox which I managed to cobble up an airbox until I can get a "proper" one to replace it, Also, when purchased, the PO said it needed a new power steering pump, it was certainly "notchy" and noisy as hell, I thought I'd start by changing the power steering reservoir, cheapest, easiest access and, as there's a filter in it I figured it wouldn't hurt, Steering is now beautiful, nice and well weighted but totally silent , MOT next, as I haven't been able to check it out properly might be interesting, Nigel

Very nice indeed. How did the mot go? A lot better than I expected, 1 x rear ARB drop link broken, Air bag light, (previously already rectified but my code reader wouldn't clear,) Small amount of corrosion both rear sill jacking points, Handbrake, (never had a BMW yet that the handbrake works for a whole year, lol,) Just finishing off the welding then re test, Thanks for asking, Nigel

Right, where to begin, It's finally MOT'd !! (depression is a total b**tard that completely drains all motivation, coupled with having to work outside, hampered progress significantly- mig welding and rain being poor partners,) The only job farmed out being the air bag light which eventually proved to be the actual occupancy mat, got a new one from the main stealers, (sorry, dealers 🤪🤪) Now she's usable I'm hoping that motivation will improve, One other small job I did do was the dashboard, remember this : To this : Finally : Thanks for reading, Nigel

That doesn't look to bad of a job, I was half expecting the entire dashboard to come out. Handy the top comes out on it's own.
Love a e39 & this one looks great.

Beautiful car Nigel! I had a manual E39 530i, proper old man SE spec but damn I loved that car! Always wanted the M5, but never happened for one reason or another. Will bookmark this and watch with interest!
Side note - Is that North End by any chance?

Figured as much. If it's where I think it is, The bricked up bit to the left of your pic is where my old garage used to be! Haven't been there in years so no idea if it is still standing or not, but that garage was a deceptively good size, much more useful than what I have nowadays!

Don't think so mate, The bricked up bit is my back yard, (& it's not very big at all) Whereabouts are you ?? Nigel
