I have a triumph 2000 estate with a Rover V8 that used to run with a BW65. The intention, when i put it back together, was to use a ZFhp422 (which i already have) which i also have in a stag.
Whilst its very nice, if one wants to engage in enthusiastic driving, its not ideal with the hopeless triumph shifter.
Ideally, id like flappy paddles so i can drive in manual mode when i want to.
The question is, what gearbox can i use? Id consider 4,5 or 6 speed. More the better i guess.
I'm really not looking to be a pioneer, more looking to do something someone else has done already.
Ive scratched around, but I'm not really seeing anything, well not thats remotely affordable.
Any thoughts?

The most modern box I have heard of used on the rover V8 is the ZF 4hp 22/24 you mention Ashcroft do a controller to allow you to use the later electronic versions of it. You can get generic kits for later boxes from the states with stand alone controllers as well and places like Browell will make you a bell housing for just about anything but none of this is cheap.

The ashcroft thing looks interesting. Will need to talk to them. Thanks for the tip If the whole excercise, with me doing the work, cost 2-3K id be happy. I know i could get it done but it would be 3 times that. Thats not going to happen.

Would it be worth having a look at what was available for the last Range Rovers and Discoverys fitted with the Range Rover V8? The 4x4 guys did all sorts of tricks with their cars.

The Compushift for the ZF sells directly from them at $638 plus sales tax, plus whatever other options you want - that is about 470 GBP. As they are fairly local to me I am happy to help out - or they may just ship directly to you - maybe without charging you sales tax as you're not in California. www.hgmelectronics.com/transmission-controllers/

Ive looked at this, but its all 4wd stuff. Need a 2wd box. The obvious one is the zf 422/24 which is of course what i already have. But the electronic version using the compushift above looks like a good solution. Sure, prefer 6 speed, but if i cant have that, i'll go with the ZF. At least i know installation is easy.

Handy!

I have an electronic ZF out of a P38 Range Rover - you can change the tail housing for 2WD application - one of the obvious benefits being that the bell housing will match up.
If you check the Classic Rover Forum there is a very detailed thread on mating the ZF4HP22 to the Rover lump.
One of these days... probably the day after never... I will be putting the ZF in my P6

With enough arseing about and engineering/adjusting you can fit any box to any car 😁
May not fit in with your not wanting to trend set but there are options and proper flappy paddles 😁

I did 2 BW35 to 4ZFHP22 conversions on Rover P5B and the 4ZF is so much better then the BW35. When i drove the Rover at 120km-hr with the BW35, the engine revs were between 3500-4000 and these dropped with the 4ZF to 2500. Also the shifting is much smoother. There are a few issues which can be solved but take time. I used the original Rover P5B shifter and had to change the "lock" mechanism in the shifter as the pattern was different and there is a forth gear. I also had to change the length of the bracket arms for the shifter and the kick down cable as these were different. It is a bit of a puzzle but doable. Then most 4ZF HP22 boxes have a electronic speedo so either you buy a module to run the mechanical speedo or you convert the speedo gauge. I bought a 4ZFHP22 from a LDV which is one of the few boxes with a mechanical speedo. The speedo showed a speed which was 30% lower then the actual speed so you need a small gearbox for the speedo cable. I did not do this because i had SATNAV in the Rover Regards Peter

Another issue is that a 4ZF in a Rover is slightly rotated. If you use a 4ZF from anither brand, then because of the rotation, the dipstick will give a faulty reading. This can be solved with mounting a sump from a Range Rover but this is fairly deep so might be the lowest point which is not good
