Hi thanks for all your advice so far, I'll do some research re different quotes, good idea. Looked for vw ups and the cheapest was over budget, fiesta is a good idea. I've heard lots of good things about a Suzuki swift but they are 1.3 or 1.5 so might be to much to insure The girls have a 1.0 Vauxhall Agila (Suzuki Splash in a Luton dress) and a 1.2 Fiat 500 . The Agila is now £450 to insure as shes 19 and the 500 is £850 , shes 17

Key word there is "she" in spite of the supposed parity between the sexes there's still a massive gap in prices.

Hi thanks for all the helpful posts👍 Definitely not getting something on the never never! Good idea on trying the less common cars for a new driver, he really wants a Jimny, he's drove one on an off road course but it's high tax and the insurance quote I found was 1400 or something, plus it would be much more that what we have to spend. I priced up a Suzuki swift which came in at just under a grand, the cheapest quote by far, a feista and Toyota agero was 1300. Heard some good things about Swift's so will look at prices of those. Good shout on the panda and kangoo, too

Tax might not be that cheap though.

We had a Terios as an office pool car for a few years. It wasn't terrible. Went a lot harder than expected too. When the lease ran out one of the mechanics at the garage that serviced it bought it off the lease company and I think he's still got it.

Trouble is he is going to have to pay for insurance and tax himself so can't burden him with something he can't afford to use! I like the idea of him in something a little less ordinary though,I'm sure he will to

Yeah I should say the kangoo 4x4 (petrol at least) is not in anyway cheap to run other than insurance. £330 road tax and 30mpg! But it’s the only van with any off-road (and it’s actually shockingly good - it’s basically a duster from before that was a thing) ability that’s not £5k a year to insure for a youngster or £10k plus to buy that I could find after many weeks of looking

I started my daughter off in a '08 Mini 1.4. Character, plenty of room inside and I reckon drums would fit with the seats folded flat. Parts are cheap and it wasn't horrific to insure. She had a year of that and I then bought her a new Cooper 1.5 turbo loaded with JCW goodies. She loves it!

The kangoo has a propensity to shat it's rear diff out if it's used in any anger and the fluid coupling that transfers the power isn't too strong either. We had some (not the 4x4) as company vans when they first came out, made of spit and kleenex and spent more time at Renault than on the road.

I think thats what my mate had as a company van - it was a new starter pool van - less than 2 years old with 100k on it, he resorted to not using the clutch to try and kill it so he got a new one

You can get an uprated prop and coupling with proper replaceable ujsfrom Europe and there’s a lot running rear diffs from mk1 xtrail. Really popular in Italy (seemingly more so than France) there’s lots of info and fixes for the issues over there. For soft roading it seems fine - for proper work with weight on board a longitudinal engine and low box are a must IMO. Build is questionable and it’s a pig to work on with a short bonnet that opens the wrong way - but that’s typical French - I own a Peugeot and a Citroen too so sucker for punishment! A car I have been considering for a more economical awd Uni replacement is a Toyota Urban cruiser D4D but not done quotes or checked real world prices

It is possible to transport a drum kit in a classic Mini if you remove all seats but the driver's.

I only know as I'm keeping my eye out for one in my budget lol

You mentioned the Swift - I had one (Sport version), great little car, handles pretty nice too, climate control was ace too. Interior is sparse but functional, boot is very small though (starts off OK but narrows towards the top due to the angle of the rear seats). I found it ridiculously easy to work on too if that's your thing, Suzuki seem to have a design philosophy of using the minimum amount of fasteners they can get away with and standard bolts/tools only, so compared with VW's torx nonsense it's a dream. I would guess you're looking at the smaller engine one rather than the Sport, but hopefully it helps a little. Any questions about them, let me know.

Have a look at the Honda Jazz I'd second that, my daughters other half looked at them when he first passed, insurance was dirt cheap and a pleanty of well looked after ones driven by older people out there. First Jazz's above I've ever seen with straight panels... My elderly next door neighbour has two of them...fully expecting one to be on it's roof or in the side of my house one day

The A2 is a good shout, even if it dies the scrap value is high on them thanks to be Aluminium.
The swifts are great also, (were) really popular with youths in Oz when they were new - should be loads of things available
