Feel like a bit of a fool asking this but knowledge is power and all that! My very own home scrapyard is starting to look a bit unkempt so I need to have a bit of a clearout. Trouble is, I have no idea what the done thing is with most of it? I have an old diff, axles, radiators, various brackets, an old catalytic convertor, propshaft, a few wheels and tyres, so a bit of mix of materials to dispose of. The local tip refuse to take anything car related (lucky if they take anything to be honest, literally like an interrogation any time you go in there ) so that's out, which leaves breakers yards? Do you just rock up with a trailer load and ask to dispose of it? Any advice appreciated ps - here's some engine bay porn to make up for such a boring topic!

Don't you have a local scrap metal yard that would take it? We have a few vans driving around shouting what might be "any old iron", and one or two that you can phone up to come and collect rather than leaving it out on the off-chance they pass.
Some catalytic convertors are fetching decent money, not sure whether the condition is relevant or if it's just because of what they're made of.

There's a few nearish me, one of which says it doesn't accept car parts and the other, details are vague.
I think because things like the diff have had oil in them in makes things a bit more specialist?
Like I say, having never done it before I'm unsure if you just rock up with your tat and say take this?
The cat is from a mid 00's Subaru Legacy with the headers still attached etc, I doubt it has any value to be honest!

I guess you don’t have passing traffic from your house? The end of the drive is where any unsaleable / unuseable metal goes from our house. It’s usually gone within a few hours. If it’s sharp or a large amount I tend to leave it on my drive with a sign on rather than the pavement in case anyone injures themselves on it and call the ambulance chasers. Last weekend a van was going around playing the steptoe and son theme tune from a PA speaker on the roof.

Brilliant haha! Not to my knowledge, I doubt any of this is worth anything to be honest, just want rid in a responsible manner. Not too keen on advertising what else might be behind closed doors in the garage plus the neighbours already roll their eyes at me enough

Where in the world are you? Might help people give more specific answers.
Also, any local garages around? You could ask them who they use?

Was just going to ask the same question Ive got a very good relationship with my local scrap dealer, first name terms, they pay me for the stuff i take in (95% car related) and I frequently come out with more than I went in with, including complete cars 🤣

Mid 00s cats are where the money is at the moment. Clean it up and get the numbers off it and then message a few cat buyers on Facebook market place. Probably be a couple of hundred quid at least.
Rest of it just message a scrap collector on the same place and they'll pick it up, or leave it next to the road

Don't know what it is like in the UK, but here a lot of the metal places wont take wheels with tyres, so you will have to demount them. They might take the diff, so long as it has been cleaned out and not full of oil.
You are lucky to get €0.25 / kg for mixed scrap at the moment, and most places wont give you anything if it is less than €50, so unless you are weighing in 200+ kg you won't be getting paid.

£140-£200 a ton car scrap here
Get the numbers of the cat - you'll be surprised what it's worth.

Separate the ferrous from the non ferrous if possible, better price if selling. I can't imagine a smearing of old oil being a problem in a steel furnace

Haha that sounds dangerous I'm in Dorset, outskirts of Poole. On the coast near the shipyards, must be dozens* of scrap dealets around there * ok, maybe dozens is a bit of an exaggeration 😀

Oh, and if it’s large amounts of copper I’ll cheerfully travel down from Norfolk to unburden you of it 🤣

Thanks all! Right so general consensus, any metal, ring a scrap merchant and they'll either come get it or I just drop it off to them. Here's the rotten old cat and headers, can't see any markings or numbers on it but has been rotting nicely in the garden Diff doesn't have any oil in it (most of it ended up on my driveway )

Talking of the devil, just walking down the street and rescued these from the end of a neighbour’s drive… An aluminium metre stick and a box of sockets, mostly draper, metabo, Sykes etc. Proper brands as opposed to my cheapie ones!! About thirty seconds later a scrap van drove past! Few!!

I'm in the same boat, got a bumper and 2 doorcards that the tip won't take as they're car parts, and the scrap yard won't take them as they're not metal or attached to a car. Just going to chop them up and put them in the plastic recycling bit by bit.

Just going to chop them up and put them in the plastic recycling bit by bit. Even with big metal parts you can cut them up and take them to the tip. Or go just before it shuts and you can throw a body in and no one would notice
