My wife has a 2016 Focus with 2055/55/16 tyres on it (Continental), today she hit a curb and it tore the side of the tyre rendering it scrap.
Having looked at it I can't believe how soft the sidewall and the tread are, I can easily push them in with my little finger. Are all modern tyres now like this?
The tyres i'm used to had much stiffer sidewalls and tread so that when flat although you could deflect them you couldn't push them in, it feels like a bicycle tyre on the sides its that thin.

Tyres can go either way, do you remember the Michelin 'Sweet Cornering/Long Runner' ads from the 80's?.......
The trend for lower profiles will also affect stiffness....

We had a brand new Suzuki Vitara AWD a few years back. All 4 tyres lasted 6000 miles!! I put it down to the short journeys and AWD drive system. Softer tyres do give more grip but at the sacrifice of durability.

We put some continentals on my caddy, while trying to work out how to use my mates new tyre machine. I noticed at the time the sidewalls were very thin, they were rippling up while fitting. Seemed we could have very easily damaged then (we had no clue what we were doing 😂) They seem good though.

Tyres with XL rating have stiffer sides and many are standard on modern stuff not just MPV. My 2016 Scirocco and my '04 Boxster both use 18" XL. Its not just weight although XL tend to be heavier rating at 93+.

I won't touch Continental tyres. Admittedly this was a while ago now, but when I used to inspect cars for a living it was only Continental tyres which could be found with large sidewall eggs on a regular basis. They also tended to crack in the dips between the treads.

I've had a Falken tyre fitted to it as it had a traction rating of A and was in stock at the local tyre place, hopefully this one will last a bit longer :-)

Bridgestone have a good stiff sidewall, Contis grip well but will blow out the sidewall very easily.
