What is the truth here.
Going from a 1.4 Corsa to a Zetec spec Fiesta with either of these engines.
What are the rumours and what is the truth?
Petrol only because of the assault on diesel by every crooked, faking it, stealth tax council out there.
She is hoping to spend not a penny over £8k

Depends how vigilant under bonnet checks are.
Personally, I'd go with the 1.25. Less to go wrong, and nice revving little things. Like a drink of oil, and cambelts and water pumps are the only real issue we see with the Sigma engine at work.
The 1.0 Ecoboost is in several Ford models, all seem fairly reliable but...
Most have no temperature gauge, and the coolant pipework is known to become brittle and fail. Leaving it too late to put the overheating warning light on the dash. But otherwise a good little engine. Wet cambelts may be an issue later on when replacements are needed tho

Are you sure she needs to spend that much grizz? My daily is a bullet proof 1.7 non turbo diesel lupo I paid 800 for.

1.25 is the sturdier engine of the 2.
Due to the higher temps the EcoBoosts run at (100+ in normal running?), it leaves very little margin for error if the hoses let go. The common ones which go are available in silicone replacements however.
The MPG however is no different to a 1.6/1.8 of a similar power output, and neither is how the engines feel.
Personally, if you want less faff, the 1.25 is the better bet. No fancy injectors, or pipes required.

Rian, I have done 210k in the Super Fiesta (tm) during which time it has had 2 front springs and legs, a coil pack, a clutch and.....oh yea an exhaust box and an o2 sensor. It always starts, it is pretty good on fuel- regularly see 40mpg out of a tank - and I think is quite well made and comfortable. PLUS you can get a huge amount of stuff in it. Double plus, you can wring its neck in every gear and it handles very well for what it is - saw an indicated 110mph+ on my private test track back from Oxford one evening... allegedly.... Not sure if that is of any help but, touch wood, my 2004 1.25 Fiesta has been spot on. My son had an eco boost 1.0 Fiesta for a year which he used for commuting to a job, he borrowed the Super Fiesta (tm) a few times and said that it was better on fuel. Your/Sally's money - find the best one you can and you will be golden. P.

See loads of 1.0 Ecoboosts. Cracked heads, cracked pistons from faulty injectors, bottom end failure from the backing coming off the cambelt and clogging the oil pickup, generally they're just curse word.
Not seen the inside of a 1.25 engine in my life.

LOL...... Just commented on something different or cheap, her response.... if I want a banger, I can stay with my 2013 Corsa with 98k miles.

My wife has a 1.0 ecoboost Focus (2016) and its a good car, the one thing about the engine that i've noticed is the lack of engine braking going down hill but I guess thats to be expected.
To be fair she hasn't done many miles in it but so far so good.

We've had 125ps 1.0 ecoboost fiestas as a company car for 8 years, they are absolutely fantastic to drive, we also run them in fiesta, focus and connect to 200,000 miles at work, early ones had a couple of cooling issues which if left caused all sorts of damage, I blew a last generation focus up on the way back form Germany once because of a leak from a gasket. But the later ones have Cylinder head temperature sensing so are protected from damaging overheat. The other key thing is servicing, like most modern high specific output engines they must have a full service history with the correct Ford oil.
Fuel economy on ours has always been in the low to mid 40's and close to 50 on a long run, the current one is a supposedly eco MHEV but still seems to give the same fuel consumption.
The 1.25 has less vices but is not as much fun to drive, they also tend to be the lower spec vehicles.

But that could all change. I never realised the 1.0 went into bigger stuff like the Focus. And those miles you are saying, are really good to hear. Sally does 12 miles each way every day..... her Corsa did not like stop start and its part of why she wants it gone.

I've driven it in focus, mondeo and Transt connect, with 125ps or less they are clearly no rocket ship but perfectly OK for someone not interested in performance.
I wouldn't worry too much about the engine if the right car turns up at the right price. There are hundreds of thousands of 1.0 ecoboost out there and most (particularly after the first couple of years)have been fine if serviced properly.

Most modern Vauxhalls just don't like living, I don't know anyone thats had one that hasnt broken. I had a 6 week old Insignia hire car that broke down on me with 600 miles on the clock :/ Also had a 2009 Corsa 1.4 hire car, it was a horrible thing. Gutless and just felt like it was built to last the length or the warranty

Not seen the inside of a 1.25 engine in my life. That ^ says a heck of a lot about the 1,0 Ecoboost engines and I'd be buying a 1.25

Going back a couple of years I drove a new 900cc eco boost CMax for work a few times, I remember being surprised at how small the engine was, It felt like a far larger engine. My Mrs has a 900cc 69 plate civic (it's the size of an accord( why do companies insist in making cars bigger all the time)) and is not sluggish, OK it's not fast, fast, but it makes a great sound when you wring its neck. . I suspect both of these smaller capacity options would work well, and if driven fairly decently, could last a long tome. Ultimately it will be her money and decision. But I feel that the 1.25 may be the way forward for her. I have also started a thread to further help my own need to direct her slightly, as a few white cars seem to pop up. forum.retro-rides.org/thread/218627/modern-fiesta-retro-graphics-ideasThe fashion for white seems to already be on the wane, and may e they do not sell that well second hand So Graphics ideas appreciated too.
