I have my MOT on Monday for the 75 and I have one of two rear number plate light bulbs out, and a "bulb out" warning on the dash on start up. I have tried to change the bulb, but it still isn't working - need to replace the pcb (apparently a relatively common problem). I have a replacement board but don't think swapping it over is entirely straight-forward so wondered if I don't get round to it this weekend (or do and it doesn't work), will it fail on one bulb being out?
It got an advisory on this issue last year (different owner) but searching previous threads suggest it may be a fail.
Thanks!

Honestly I think it will be down to the tester - maybe just his mood on your test day!
If they do fail it on that alone I think it's worth explaining that you already have the parts ready to sort it out ASAP as it's not just a bulb issue.

One lamp working out of a pair is a pass with minor defect. The link to the MOT testing manual is available pinned in the questions section for all to read through.

What LeMinty said, depends on the tester. I'd say most will be fine with it, but some are more 'thorough'.

Thanks all. Of course, they both appear to be working today (haven't been for the last few weeks). What's the bet that neither works come the MOT ...

No, pass with minor defect. 👍🏻 Ace Seems to me that there's less tester discretion than there used to be.. They want less ‘discretion’ on a lot of items that should be ‘black and white’ really. Manual is pretty easy to follow to so there shouldn’t be too many grey areas

Nowt to do with down to tester Unless he can't read and operate the MOT computer system, it is just an advise If there was only 1 bulb holder fitted that doesn't work, or multiple and they ALL don't work its then a fail

They waived it in the end when I told them to cancel the MOT and I’d get it redone at an official government station.

Yes, if I’m reading what you are saying correctly, you are saying you have a single lamp and it’s inoperative that’s a fail. If you have 2, 4, 8, whatever, and only one works, that’s still a pass with minor. The minimum number of functioning license plate lamps is 1, regardless of how many fitted. If you had more than one but only one working, then you were right to challenge them as they were in the wrong.

So both lights failed the night before the test .... of course they did. It turns out switching the board was actually pretty easy though (took about thirty minutes) so it didn't fail on that.
It did however fail on something quite annoying - missing exhaust heat shield. The tester said he spent some time trying to work out whether it should have one as it would only fail if it had one OEM. He noticed the bolt holes not attaching anything. The manual says: "Only fail a vehicle for missing heat shields if there’s a risk of fire with other fuel system components" - apparently it was because it was between the exhaust and the petrol tank it was a fail.
Of course, a quick post on the 75 FB page was full of "they all rust away and rattle, I ripped mine off as soon as it got the car and it has went through three MOTs since with no advisories". Seems I got the world's most diligent tester ...

Even more annoying is it is a "dangerous defect: do not drive" so even though I have two weeks MOT left, can't drive it ... despite having not had a heat shield since I got the car ten months ago and having not had a fire yet ...

Fail is fail. You can’t drive if the car has had a failure issued unless the defects are rectified. Doing so it knowingly driving a car in an unroadworthy condition. Make a new heat shield from some thin alloy. Should be easy enough.

Jah I know just a bit annoying ... it apparently only became a fail two years ago and I have never heard of a car going up in flames due to a lack of heat shield ... Ordered a replacement, £74, should be back on the road by the weekend.

Ordered a replacement, £74, should be back on the road by the weekend. We had a Focus in at work many years ago, that had a fuel leak when filled with fuel. Turns out that had a heat shield removed due to it flapping about. The heat from the exhaust melted that side of the tank enough to make a gaping hole
