Well, would you believe it? The welder came yesterday to make a start and admitted that it has been 14 years since he has TIG welded aluminium so he spent a couple of hours having a practise after which he said he didn't want to risk messing up my panels so he has declined the job. In a way, I found this quite pleasing that even a professional welder who isn't welding aluminium on a regular basis finds it difficult. My problem isn't so much the welding, more of getting in a comfortable position to do the vertical runs. But I shall give it my best shot. Where it isn't possible to get behind the joints to planish them I have inserted a piece of sheet and riveted it in place in the hope that it will reduce shrinkage and minimise the metal finishing. We'll have to see if that works. I'm not sure my old Telwin welder is doing me any favours so I shall shortly be placing an order for a new machine from R-Tech. That way I'll have no excuses and not be able to blame the tool!

R Tech are great welders, should make your life a lot easier. Yes you're quite right, and they are a nice firm to deal with. I already have one of their MIG welders and Plasma cutter. The plasma cutter is for sale if anyone is interested. I bought it specifically to cut parts from the Fiesta which I have now done.

I advertised my old TIG welder which I have had since the 90s because I'm not prepared to spend any money on it to have the foot pedal repaired. To my amazement, it sold the very next day closely followed by the plasma cutter, the proceeds of which are a considerable help to fund the new R-Tech unit.

it is weird, but also refreshing that a relatively new name in welding equipment has made such good in-roads into the industry. cottage industry success story

I keep promising myself to splash out and get a CK torch for a bit more finesse - The Binzel torch on mine is not overly large and heavy but its the cables and sheath that can make it more cumbersome than it should be.

Same tig as mine. I've found it fairly decent.

The new TIG welder has arrived and after spending a bit of time experimenting with settings, I'm pretty pleased with it. My only reservation is the weight of the torch which is good for 200Amps and able to cope with the welder on maximum power but an overkill for welding thin aluminium. It has a flexible head which is great for getting in a comfortable position. You can get smaller/shorter ceramics for the front as well as a shorter back cap. I'm with you in hating them like you have , it makes them unwieldy.

Not the best of days yesterday but not so good days are inevitable with any project and, in a sense needed, to accentuate the good ones. I had a really off day continuing welding the extension piece to the quarter panel. Welding vertically downhill I was unable to keep the tungsten within the critical distance from the job and ended up with oxidation of the joint which is about the worst situation possible when welding aluminium because once oxide is in the joint, removing it is nigh on impossible and further welding cannot proceed. But I persevered and got to the end with the panel looking as distorted as a Smiths crisp and a weld so bad I'm too embarrassed to show you. I'll revisit it later on but am fully prepared to cut it off and start again.
I realised right from the outset that I would have trouble welding the body on the frame which is why I sought the help of a professional who sadly declined. But I remembered my tutor from when I learned to gas weld aluminium at Exeter college who retired a few years ago but I know he still takes on welding jobs locally. I gave him a call and he said he would help and try to get over next week. If that happens it will be a huge relief.

Welding downhill is going to be a struggle for anyone so don't beat yourself up about if. Perhaps try up hill even if you can only do say 15mm a time . Perhaps use an airline to cool between welds and/or a wet rag.

Perhaps use an airline to cool between welds and/or a wet rag. I think you're absolutely right about welding uphill. Far easier to see the tip of the electrode and I believe welding up hill is also a bit easier. TIG welding is all about hand/ eye coordination and I just had an off day yesterday. I should have stopped as soon as I could see that things were not going well but I never do. I've spent a bit of time today with a hammer and dolly and body file and things don't look nearly as bad as they did yesterday and I think the panel may be okay. I cannot vouch for the integrity of the weld and I guess there is always the possibility that it might crack in time. This photo taken after the first session and this one some time later after the second. It's a good workout so I have to do these things in stages. The improvement is encouraging so worth persevering I feel.

Even if your old tutor can just give you some tips and pointers on possible ease of attack I'm sure it will help a lot with confidence.
You're doing a lot better than I think I ever would!

That's very kind of you, thank you. Rest assured, that while he is here I'll wring every bit of help and advice from him that I can. He's a brilliant welder, coded and coming from the aircraft industry with a lifetime of experience in all types of welding. I'm really lucky that he so readily agreed to come over and help me.

Well done John. You're the man. Jake looking at your eclectic list of cars, I would gladly have any one of them. The Toledo and Dolomite were our both family cars back in the '70s and I found them exceptionally good with decent suspension and great handling. The Peugeot 106 Rallye has amazing performance and my friend John Lyon won every sprint and hill climb he took part in driving a 106. And then the Audi S3, four wheel drive, hugely understated and so competent. We had a fleet of them when I worked at Beford Autodrome and I absolutely loved them, so much quicker than the more powerful TTs that were run at the same time. A great collection and I am very envious.

A great collection and I am very envious. Thank you John, I appreciate the kind words, I come from a very humble background, a council house with a single parent who worked hard and tolerated my habit for dismantling everything and channelled me into a career in engineering. I'm very pleased today that I am able to have a workshop of my own and I am able to keep more than one car. I pinch myself every day that I got so lucky. Of course my collection is relatively humble, it would be nice to have more exotic cars, but I am very content with what I have, and they give me much joy. I think I have chosen pretty well in the "bang for your buck" stakes. They have also given me experience in working with my hands, and the confidence that comes with that. The Audi especially is very capable as a daily driver through these tough Finnish winters. I hope with a few more years under my belt i'll have the kind of confidence/experience levels that will allow me to attempt the kind of work you are showing us here. Keep at it and thanks for the inspiration.
