	Morning. Now how does one find out about SORN history on this truck as it does not seem to show online. Before I purchase a plate for the truck. See the point circled in green. Thanks as always. I would hate to buy a plate with nowhere to stick it except up a dark space. .

	Same reply as in your thread I thought we'd done all this??? I thought you said the plate was tagged on the reg doc as non transferable? This normally means it's had a plate transfer in the past or has been assigned a "new plate" - the non transferable bit I think means you can't take it off this truck and move it onto another car - but you can buy a plate and then assign it to the truck The 5 years bit only relates to the SORN (once on SORN it can be on SORN for up to 5 years max before you can no longer remove the plate) the 5 years bit doesn't apply to the tax - it just has to be taxed at the time of plate removal

	You can't check the SORN History as such - the vehicle is either Taxed or SORN SORN used to be annual (some frequency as VED) so if you SORN's a car you had to renew it every 12 mths (if you hadn't put the car back on the road at all) Now SORN is continuous - once SORN's it stays SORN'd until you tax it

I still am neurotic about losing £400 on owning a plate with nowhere to put it. I am not sure if I am missing something here. And no humans to speak to.

	I was under the impression that it was still possible to transfer on a plate if the vehicle is taxed, but does not have the 5-year history, but the online system will not let you. It would have to be done by post. The website you quoted is somewhat vague on this (e.g. brand new cars would appear to not be eligible for private plates until they are over 5 years old!), so worth trying them on phone or webchat (https://contact.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles) again...

My E38 was SORN for 6 plus years (I missed the 5 yr deadline for removing the plate whilst on SORN) Mot’d and taxed for first time in Feb - removed plate and assigned original all on line and in mins

	bstardchild , in your case you had 5 years of continuous history so met the rules listed on DVLA website, so online was fine (the taxing essentially satisfies them that the car does in fact still exist). OP is asking about the case where it is not known what the 5 year history is (e.g. what if it was with a dealer a few years bac on a yellow slip, so not SORN or taxed). I'm fairly certain I've seen this happen before, and the online system will reject it, but post is fine, particularly if it is now taxed as the car has passed inspection and does in fact exist.

There is no requirement for 5 years of continuous Tax or continuous SORN to assign a plate to a vehicle How would brand new cars get a private plate fitted

	bstardchild exactly, the DVLA website is clearly incorrect at www.gov.uk/personalised-vehicle-registration-numbers/keep-or-assign as it says: The vehicle must: - be registered with DVLA in the UK - be able to move under its own power - be of a type that needs an MOT or heavy goods vehicle (HGV) test certificate - have been taxed or had a SORN in place continuously for the past 5 years - be taxed currently (or have a SORN in place - if it’s had a SORN for more than 5 years, it must be taxed) - be available for inspection which is clearly not true, as new cars can have private plates.

I agree but I think that’s to remove a number not assign one

Thats correct Tessierashpool My worry is that just because its a system thing it could reject it because of the dealer ownership without SORN or MOT/Tax but driving it on dealer plates. Paying for the plates without being able to use them would really hack me off.
