Oh no! I’ve done it again, I have too many cars and its time to let one or two go. This purchase was the result of too much coffee fuelled excitement one Monday morning on Facebook marketplace! It’s been a very practical companion in my short ownership, but I have another estate car about to land from Japan any day now so I can’t really justify keeping two wagons!
A brief rundown of the specs on this fine piece of Bavarian motoring:
• BMW 528i Touring – Rare Manual
• SE Model in Orient blue over Grey leather interior.
• 163,500 miles and counting
• MOT until Feb 2022
• Large Android head unit with nav, Bluetooth etc. All the wheel controls maintained and it’s a very nice OEM integration.
• Factory phone (disconnected)
• Cruise Control
• PDC (Parking Sensors, working!)
• Ice cold Climate control AC
• Rear self-levelling suspension, all working fine.
• Large amount of recent work including:
o New Alternator
o New Cooling system inc pump and radiator
o Rebuilt Vanos
o New Belts
o New Battery
o All new suspension arms up front
o Serviced
• Lowered 35mm on springs at the front (Standard ones included) with the self levelling suspension at the rear modified using software, not bodged with a bracket or anything!
• Has a cone filter, but comes with original airbox.
So a brief history of me and the car. I bought it about 2 months ago off a great guy in Swindon who had spent his ownership fixing issues and doing preventative maintenance to the car. I’ve always wanted to try an E39 Touring but Manuals never appeared for sale! And, given the scary bits have all been done to this one, I had to snap it up.
In the time I’ve owned it I’ve had to replace the alternator, and one of the suspension arms which was taken out by a pothole! Other than that its been good as gold.
On the exterior its looking good for its age, but it’s a 163,000 BMW. So the rear arches have started to scab up a bit where they meet the rear bumper, and so have the sills in the most forward and rearward section. Both front wings have been replaced however, so they’re all good! Overall I’d say the cars metalwork is remarkably solid for an E39. There are scuffs both ends of the car, and the rear boot has a dent on it. The split folding tailgate with soft close is all working great, a common failure point on these. The wheels are upgraded items from the V8 models of E39 and suit the car, all with decent life left in the tyres.
Inside the interior wears its miles well, with the expected wear and tear but nothing excessive. The clocks have had the LCD replaced, as it did have the common issue of dead pixels. The only item not working in here, other than the disconnected armrest phone, is the rear passenger window switch for the driver. Switch works fine on the rear passenger door though, so it’s a switch or wiring issue not the window itself. Car still has the boot pull cover with built in dog guard, as well as the straps on the boot floor for holding stuff down. The upgraded Android unit makes the car much more usable day to day, with nav and the ability to pair your phone. It currently has a pretty weak FM antenna in the dash, so you’ll probably want to change this if you listen to a lot of radio. The steering wheel in the car is an upgraded M-Sport one with working buttons etc, the headlining has been replaced with a black one (much more practical) and the trim is now piano black rather than the faux-wood it left the factory with.
In summary, this is a very honest and rare Manual 528i Touring that is looking for its forever home! It’s been enthusiast owned, and clearly cared for in its life. I believe this is why its managed to keep going all these miles without any of the serious rust issues that have killed so many E39s, nor seemingly any mechanical ones.
Priced to sell, please do not hesitate to contact me for more Information. If I get full asking price, I’ll throw in a Laptop which has full BMW Diagnostic software included with the relevant lead!
