"Nope, the paint was put on so badly it looks like <put on with> a bowling ball.."
Sad thing is there is a decent amount of paint on the car but it's been put on too thick, too close. Then it's had clear thrown on it. Really I need to get down through the clear but I don't think it's going to improve by being flatted, the particles in the paint are all sat at different angles where he sprayed different parts at different times.
I think I'll be cutting losses on the paint anyway.
Got busy with the crane and liberated the engine and gearbox from the car.
We have code A; +0.040" pistons so it is a 326ci. But, they are for a 32 valve engine of unknown origin.
Wedge heads. Been stored damp. One valve is stuck.
I am not sure if that's a compatible combination. Asking the 318 gurus elsewhere.
One pot is a bit mediocre. I'm going to pull all the pistons out- something in that one is causing a score.
Gearbox bell-housing tells me that was a rattle can rebuild...
Ultimately I could just whack this together and smoke about in it while I'm looking for a 440. I'll pull the other head off during the week, inspect that, clean as necessary and then get the timing chain off, get the crank out and pull the pistons.
I pulled one bank of pistons out. Recall how I had half-joked about being concerned a rod was in backwards? Yeah, they'd actually done that. Pistons 7 and 8 were transposed, meaning the two rearmost rods were installed backwards. You can see there, the pistons were all the right way round but the rod on the right doesn't have the square mark upright.
There's also quite a lot of fod. You can see the twinkly bits above the top ring. That's all coming out for a good clean.
There is nothing like the DMV in the UK. They are amazing. I would argue that covid has only made them less of a hassle.
Amazing... No. Efficient... No.
But neither is the DVLC.
Rural DMV offices can be ok, inner city ones? Hell no.
Visiting the offices in town is like some sort of specially created purgatory, filled with screaming children and drunkards trying to get their licenses back, people trying to register cars that don't belong to them and many other things that take hours of arguing on their part meaning you wait all day then get kicked out when they close without actually being served.
