This evening I went rummage in boxes to see if I could mount the alternator so I could see which pulley it lines up with. I'm missing some hardware so I'll have to order that- shims, spacers, a funny washer.
On the plus side it was refusing to idle so I started messing about with the idle mix which did nothing.
Looked back, well, the timing looks loose. Sure enough. Give it a tweak and it quietens down into a happy idle. Tweak the idle mix and hey presto. Carb still needs a rebuild but it's running nicely now. Who'da thunk it? I need to put the timing light on it and see what it reckons.

Well, help me understand. I now have pulleys that all fit in place but nothing lines up at all.

can you turn around the front steering pump bracket , and space out the rear one to bring the pump back a bit phil ? No, that's fixed. The crank and water pump pulley can be shimmed and there's a bit of adjustment in the alternator. I might pull the other pump out and see if that lines up (even if the bracket doesn't fit right).

Looks like the crankshaft pulley is wrong, if the spacing on that was different the pulleys would line up for 2 short belts ?

Black is not a colour ! .... Its the absence of colour

My 318 came with four alloy pulleys, no combination of which would line up. Luckily I have a lathe. Seems to be a theme with LA engines.

Yeah, pulleys are the only thing on this series of engines that don't make sense and are freakishly expensive.
The rest of it is fine.
Way it goes.

Decided to see if the paint on top of the wing would hold a shine. Lipstick, meet pig.

Waved the polishing mop at one side of the hood. Yeah. Gonna buff the rest of the car up. Paint is terrible but it makes the car look a little more loved, sitting on the driveway.

Hood is done well enough. Looks like a slightly less neglected driveway ornament now.

Sanding sanding sanding Was starting to lose the will to live. I don't like sanding. Not very good, all hazy and scratches. Looks better from the street, though.

That whole cleaning process is also therapeutic, even when we hate it.
And the car looks better.

Polished, it's a nicer color. However, I'm still going crimson with the paint.

Fair enough phil , gosh i hadn't noticed how inset the wheels are . Yeah. The tires are too small, someone put itty bitty radials on it. That doesn't help the look. I've been suggested to find a set of 15" wheels (those are 14") to improve and cheapen the choice of new rubber. But yeah, they just expanded the body out well past the original design spec, and ended up with the ubiquitous American car look of the sixties.
