Yep. You will have to dip them. There is no gel type stripper that would be man enough the DCM just evaporates off too quickly.
Search out a company called Blast Wash UK. They do an alloy wheel stripper. It's mostly Dichloromethane with a bit a Hydrofloric acid in it so it's the proper stuff and requires respect when in use (full face mask, arm length gloves etc.) Works great tho!
It's about 80quid for 25L.

Well if that is SOP for this type of stripper they should just state that on the description and instructions, not "brush on and leave for 10-15 minutes and then wash off with water" when that is impossible to do with it. I mean it would save them a lot of grief surely...
Live and learn i guess.

I used some Starchem Synstrip on mine and it did reasonably well, but not great. I can't be sure whether mine were powder-coated before, though.

I applied it with a paintbrush just like normal paint stripper. It did dry off after a few minutes - it's a while ago so I'm a bit hazy on the details. It doesn't flash off like cellulose thinners, it's not that quick.
