Thanks for the detailed reply - one of many musings, the BMW 2.8 defenders are meant to be the best petrol ones so I wondered if the aj6 would fit to do a cheap British alternative ! The mixing of a nice smooth 6 and auto in a ratty leafer appeals more than a me too Rover V8. Not going to happen house, tractor, pond, children all on the list above messing with modified cars ! I think Ashcrofts do a conversion to mate the ZF auto box to a Landrover transfer box. I remember the ZF box being used to convert series and defender landrovers to autos. There is at least one series around with the Jaguar straight 6 fitted. It is the one engine swap I've though about for my Series 2.

The zf is already mated to the landrover lt230 transfer box for the range rover, to make it fit to an aj6 you would need to re-build the box with the jag front case and torque converter, it's probably dooable I know people have built v8 front cases into jag and bmw 2wd transmissions to give a 2wd v8 transmission, this would be the reverse.

It would make a hell of a car. Probably more suited to offroad than the BMW 6 as well with 278lb-ft for the 4.0l one (at the cost of worse economy I expect, but probably better than an RV8...).

My XJ40 used to average about 22mpg with the 4.0 manual. That's a 1.8 ton car, but also a bit more aerodynamic/less 4WD than a Landie so might even out? If you want some more detailed dimensions, I made this from my engine

I'm not a fan. I've always thought a BMW S-6 (such as the N52 in the Z4) would be perfect for a a GT6. Its pretty light IIRC. As some pennance please see some GT6 action below. MK3, Damson Red, Revolutions and body coloured overiders. Perfection. _0051607 by Kevin Tyson, on Flickr

Here's another...... and it lives in my garage TBH, I think squeezing a BMW 6 in there would be a very big challenge as the Triumph 6 is very compact and it's a really tight fit. Then you have to squeeze a gearbox in there....... I've just managed to persuade an MX5 box into this one with minimal chopping to the car but it wasn't easy. Nick

Yeah I've seen someone fit an M20 into a Spitfire which required some pretty significant chopping to the bulkhead to get it back far enough to drop it beneath the bonnet line. It did fit though, and not with much more cutting than is needed to move the stock engine back so it'll drop down behind the rack. I think he was running it on bike carbs though so I'm not sure abut the intake that swings up over the cam cover.
Later BMW engines also have the issue of being slanted which gives them quite a square profile which doesn't necessarily lend itself to a Spit engine bay (but might help with the height). Can't remember what the M52/M54 exhaust manifolds look like but suspension turret clearance might be interesting.
I've only got a smattering of dimensions for M20s and M52s. The height on the M52 is 25" which would work if the width is ok (the Triumph I6 is 26" tall, but being shorter the nose of the engine might pose issues).
Of course, if you're getting to the point of making your own chassis like these guys then all those issues are sortable...

Heresy perhaps but the best faux GT6 I've seen built was Spitfire based and used the Ford Cologne V6. Not a modern engine by any means and a bit heavy, but easier to get 160ish bhp out of that, than modify a 2498cc Triumph engine, for example.

Perfectly possible and even reasonably easy to get 160 bhp from the triumph 2.5. Getting much over that starts to get expensive but 200+ is possible for a road drivable engine.
It might even be lighter than the Ford boat anchor, though the shape of the latter would at least mean that weight was a bit further back. Ford gearboxes rather better too.
However, there is no escape from the fact that the GT6 is already a significant stretch of the the original 1147cc 65bhp Spitfire so there’s minimal margins left in anything.
Makes extracting more from them all the more challenging 🙂
