My car insurance is due very soon and I have the crazy notion to get a Japanese import once we are out of lockdown.
The problem that I can see coming is that my current car carries the full no claims bonus and a second car, the J import may end up with zero no claims bonus resulting in a high quote.
Anyone in a similar situation ? or can someone recommend a company I can try for a quote without having to try and explain all this to a sales person that has no knowledge of cars !

I would say stop worrying about the no claims, if you want the car (WHAT IS IT?) buy it, insure it and drive the wheels off it.
Simple really, just get on with buying, insuring it.

I agree with grizz , if you see something you like get it! I have a y34 cedric with the rb25det in it and the first time I insured it with zero no claims (they were on something else) it was about £500 to insure which I didn't think was too bad. It was sky insurance I used who specialise in that stuff and the guy on the phone cloned my no claims which brought it down a bit and he actually knew what the car was as well.

Everyone seems to assume that my Cube is an import, but its not, its a uk car, so as typicly odd and import-ish as it is, I don't need to worry import type high insurance quotes, sorry I cant help.

I’ve had my GMC Safari, Nissan Largo and Nissan Elgrand (all imports) covered by A Plan very reasonably. They have the ability to mirror no claims bonuses too. Think you need to call the Thatcham branch and explain that it’s a J import and they’ll put you through to the correct scheme dept.

I’m in the same situation with my daily and my VW Transporter. I used comparison sites to work out the cheapest option. Went with Admiral Multicar in the end as they were cheapest, they didn’t mirror the no claims but gave a 10% discount.
I do this each year as we have 3 vehicles in our household with the wife’s car, try different combinations of cars and drivers until I get the cheapest quote.
I’ve tried specialist insurers and brokers but the big names always come out cheapest - Admiral, LV, AXA

I would agree with you 100% if it was a must have car sadly this one is more of a "it will do for now" car which might not be that great of an idea. I may need to rethink this one.

If you want proper cover you need specialist insurance.
Comparison sites are for ‘normal’ people with ‘normal’ cars, if you take out cover through them you’ll find it falls way short of what a specialist will offer.

As long as the terms and conditions suit your needs then there’s really no difference.

As long as the terms and conditions suit your needs then there’s really no difference. It really isn’t. Specialist vehicles require specialist products. If you live in a world where ‘best’ and ‘cheapest’ are the same thing, carry on. But it’s very likely that you’ll pay around the same or less for a better product with a specialist insurer if you’re prepared to do a little legwork. Its literally why they exist. With a disposable or easily replaceable vehicle If you just bang some numbers into an online comparison site and let the (flawed) algorithm do the work for you then pick the cheapest one, that’s fair enough. But doing that with anything out of the ordinary or that you actually care about is madness.

My Insight is an import and daily. Imports do need import insurance. If you tick the import box on a comparison site you’ll notice that almost all the quotes either disappear or go up massively. I don’t know why. The insurers familiar with imports will insure them for less and with fewer confusing or irrelevant questions.
I’m currently insured with Adrian Flux but I’d prefer to move away from them. I forget who I was with before, but they stopped covering hybrids which was annoying. Flux let you do modifications though. I know there are better J import insurers but I haven’t been around the scene enough to work out where to find them! It’s probably a matter of picking up one of the mags next time I’m in the petrol station but I never seem to remember until it’s too late.
