Hi I am after some advice on how/if people clear coat bare metal. I am building a pedal car and want to keep it as the picture below, its a shot blasted finish with some patina that I want to keep and don't really want to paint it. I've read some mixed things on clear coating, like it flaking off after a couple of months or spider web rust forming under the lacquer. Its not a polished finished so thought anything should bond ok. Also its having some pinstriping and lettering when finished and I don't want the clear coat coming off and ruining it. Does anyone have any advice on a suitable protection or any recommended products/techniques? Thank you 😊

Apart from degreasing it with panel wipe thoroughly I don't think theres alot you can do. You obviously want the surface you want so cant abrade it and cant prime it or anything.
Most stuff I do is either polished or rusty ('patina'!). I just degrease it and spray 2k over the top basically. It's not as durable or long lasting as a proper paint job will be but that just the way it is.

Its a fairly rough finish that will hopefully help as a key and its just a pedal car so won't see any harsh weather or anything.

Yeah it should work ok.
If it's rusty and you want to preserve the patina with a clearcoat then it's a good idea to bake it first so the rust is completely bone dry otherwise it'll creep underneath it, but that's probably only an issue if the life of the thing is more than 10 years or so.

That sounds like a good tip thanks! Hopefully with it not being exposed to too harsh conditions it will hold up!

You could just oil it with Gibbs oil.

You can get various brands of specific DTM clear now. You have to use an adhesion promoter if you’re putting it over existing paint (I.e. patina) though. My truck is getting done in Mipa products next week and they were pretty helpful about what product to use, and keen to work with gaygeorge who is doing it as they know there is a market for such products.

Thanks for all the advice on this. Some helpful ideas on how to go about it. I'm toying with straightening the body out and painting it metal flake purple but still in two minds at the minute.
