On the subject of labour rates, historically bodyshop rates have always been lower than mechanical work, not sure why since id class bodywork as a higher skilled job? This may have changed, I’ve been out of the trade for years now As regards merc dealers, my dad uses a local merc specialist for his 180 compressor, who was charging £95 an hour last time he checked Local rates in central Norfolk seem to be £50/hr for mechanical too

Nice thought, the main problem is I want a custom material, which I have already purchased, its traditional upholstery stuff too.

In 2000 I had the front and rear bench seats of my Rover P4 retrimmed. It cost me about £2.5K.

My worst worry about dying is my wife selling my stuff for what I told her it cost...

I also had a mk2 Escort estate about 25 years ago, and my mum reupholstered the seats for me When the car finally died ( stolen, wrecked and recovered) the seats had survived, so i sold them for more than the car was worth! Can always have a go at upholstery yourself? Plenty of people seem to manage a pretty reasonable job and you’re not paying labour ( especially if its your mum.....😀)

Vinyl, leather, velvet or some other type fabric? Reason I ask is a colleague at my old work got his seats done at Cobra a while back and he supplied the fabric but IIRC he was quoted different prices on what type of material he wanted to use. I'll see if I can contact him over the weekend and get some details for you.

The material is an older style period wool/polyester covering, and funnily, I have Corbeau just over the back to me, I might wing my way over there on Monday

I fully understand the time and effort it takes to do the work, The seats I have are about £200 to buy new, and Trimmed, then have to spend a further £800 to retrim them Just dosent calculate, 200 to make and trim, then 800 for a lot less work involved...... Thing is the upholsterer will have to unpick the existing covers and mark and cut the new material, then sew together and fit. Cobra or Corbeau or whoever just put the material in their CNC machine and fire off a set of panels which are then stitched together, probably with some jigging or tooling, possibly even completely automated. The only extra cost to them is breaking their production line to change the material. So you're comparing apples with bananas

you have to consider what a plumber, sparky, or similar would charge, £50 an hour isn't cheap, but probably less than many charge

The material is an older style period wool/polyester covering, and funnily, I have Corbeau just over the back to me, I might wing my way over there on Monday I have asked me old work pal about the seats he got covered at Cobra and he bought new seats from them and supplied the material himself. They needed to have a sample of the material to see if it was possible and to give an accurate quote. He can't remember the exact price now as it was a good few years ago but he thinks it was only about £70-80 (for 2 seats) more than the stock seats. He did say though they were really helpful and they did a real nice job on the seats. To be cost effective you would really need buy new seats from them as I originally suggested and probably supply a sample of material to them and go from there or suck up the £50 an hour quote you have already and cover the seats you have. Decisions, decisions..........

Well after faffing around with most of the upholstery shops within about 20 miles of where I live, getting silly quotes, which, in retrospect, was, I think, I don't want this Job price, Bearing in mind, there is no piping, no special fitments, no elastic, just covering a pair of fibreglass buckets with a bit of cloth. Quotes had come in ranging from an old boy, who did not do car seats, @ £200, to over £1k thats just for labour too, then finding a small upholstery shop tucked away in an old back street of Hasting, showed him the seats and cloth, then he was interested, oooh what are they going in? so I told him, turns out he has a much modified Minor, his uncle he works with has a much modified MK1 Cortina, and, his rates are £200 per day, and thinks the seats will take about a day and a half, Win Win, can you guess who has got the job??
