Was doing the usual cruising around ebay looking for bargains/next project (the Triumph is back on the road and the Coupe nearly there!) and found this absolute animal. Scraped together every last penny from the project fund and we did a deal! Just arrived today with me in the South, all the way from Dundee.
So far it is described correctly by the previous owner who was a lovely chap and very helpful generally. Nice to do a deal with someone who isn't trying to screw you over or lie!
Apparently it might be known with the Metro gti crowd (keen to learn more about it!) but this is what I know/can remember:
- 1993 Metro Gti 16v, originally red but now white - Full respray about 10 years ago - Now has a 1.8vvc 160bhp engine out of an MGF - Custom bigger exhaust, cone intake filter - K Maps ECU (rolling road tuned to 177bhp, 140ft/lb) - Big AP Racing brakes up front - Compomotive 15" wheels - Fully stripped interior (still got the dash, leccy windows) - Corbeau bucket seats with 4 point harnesses - 6 point Safety Devices cage - No brake servo, you have to stamp it hard! - PG1 gearbox from an MGF (also in original Elise apparently) - Custom rear suspension hubs for shocks (to replace the original hydrolastic jobbies) - AVO adjustable suspension - Race battery under passenger seat - About 800kg wet I'm told, no evidence of that but makes sense I guess given it is stripped (and was 880kg out of the factory) - Goodyear Eagle F1s
It needs a few bits doing to it:
- Some rust appearing in roof guttering and a touch at the bottom of the A pillar. Nothing serious but I do fear rust so that'll be high on the list - Bit of a tidy with the wiring and interior - Thermostat switch stopped working, have a replacement plus twin fans to improve cooling
I've only taken it round the block but I just love it. Very different experience from the Fiat Coupe turbo, loud and harsh and just perfect. I've found the coupe just a bit too civilised, this is definitely not. Brakes will take some getting used to but I've had non servo cars in the past.
Reminds me a lot of my old mk2 xr2 (1.9cvh twin webbers), tiny and very fast and very anti-social. So good to be back in a small exhausting deathtrap!!
Pics to follow in a moment!!

Not a fan of the Metro (or a hater either, completely indifferent to them and most Rovers), but lowered on those wheels it looks very right.

As an ex-IMP nutter [998 + no mats!] I'm up for bleeding ears & gravel rash OVIMORHa nice. Got a slightly longer drive in it and it's uncomfortable, very loud, rattles due to no interior, everything vibrates. Absolutely love it, is exactly what I wanted, feels like you're going at race-pace even when cruising at 20mph. I'll be using it for the weekly shopping run until I can get time to track it (got a new baby coming in 3 weeks so it might be the shopping car trips only for a while!). I'll pretend I'm on track...

that looks smart certainly upset more powerful cars There are some vids of it on youtube, hard to be certain it is the same car but looks it (and previous owner says it is), plus it has still got a camera mount in exactly the same position. Has a different engine in this video (200bhp+ modified Rover engine of some sort I believe) so is more powerful in the video than the current engine, but it looks like it destroys some decent motors. The driver has far more talent than me though.

Been enjoying the metro for a few days, its turned into the most reliable of the s**tbox fleet (and the Coupe clutch slave has gone and is blocking the Herald in the garage ffs). But it turned on me a few days ago, just cut out when I was pulling off and wouldn't catch (turning over fine). Suspected the fuel pump so out it came. Great access as there is no interior! Neighbours might have thought it a little odd to be sat in the boot at 11pm but there we are. It looks like it has had an upgrade to a walbro 255 (or similar) which is nice to see. Not so nice to see is the burst fuel line, literally it had just popped. Good news though, as I have spare hose. Bit of fiddling and on goes some new hose. Put it all back in and the old girl fired straight up and had been running fine since, although now with a slight whine which I will investigate later.

The old girl hasn't been playing ball the past few weeks, the fuel pump seemed to give up the ghost. Got some help looking into it and the pump just wasn't getting power, not sure why and it gets it's power from an unidentified wire into the ecu. Anyway, wired it directly to the ignition, added a switch so I can be race car, we're back up and running! Also the battery died, its a small race battery under the passenger seat and doesn't have terminals big enough to attach Jumpers to. So have added a couple of longer terminal cables for the regular and inevitable jumps/charging it'll need. Now ready for the weekly shop woohoo! There is some rust on the a pillar near the windscreen which is worrying me, hope it hasn't reached the screen although these things are usually worse than they look! Saving to get all the rust dealt with early as the shell is generally very tidy. Swapped out the smoked indicators for nos original orange ones and added badges too. Maybe slightly controversially, in going to put a stereo, 2 speakers and small underfloor sub into it. Yes it'll add weight and sound rubbish due to being stripped out, but I like to listen to music or podcasts on longer journeys, and I'll be driving it on the road more that on a track. The car seems to divide opinion which I'm enjoying, lots of thumbs up when driving but an ebay buyer who collected something asked why on earth I'd bother and many comments from friends who can't understand why I'd put money into an early 90s shopping cart. All good fun, ill turn them eventually!

I had an old 1.4 Metro Gti, and what I wouldn't give to razzing about in it now for a weekend.
They were a great little rollerskate to throw around, very unrefined which made you feel involved with what it was doing lol. And that didn't have as much oomph as yours.
You keep forging ahead, it's often more fun to take the less obvious routes and I'm loving the read.

Had a good old blast a couple of nights ago to get the battery charged up, it really is a rollerskate. I totally missed these when they came out (was into ford and vw mostly), glad to have discovered them finally. If you're ever in the area (Herts) then DM and I'll take you out for a blast!

Not much of an update except that the metro hasn't been driven for probably 3 weeks and is parked under a tree. The birds obviously see a nice white target and have done a dirty protest. Battery was dead so gave it a jump, filled up the front left tyre which had a slow puncture, and went for a spin to charge it back up. Saturday night driving where I am is perfect, quiet roads for a blat. Keep thinking about the next stage and whether I go for more power but it still gets my heart going on full power so probably OK for now. Clearing out the garage and repainting it so that will be this week. Then some minor electrical jobs, get the new fan and thermostat working. Then tackle a couple of rusty bits. Then it'll be time to wrap it. Paint probably doesn't make sense right now with funds plus I have zero interest in cleaning or polishing a car. For a few hundred quid I will give wrapping a go myself with help from a friend, looks fun to do. Colour choice is tough, it was originally metallic red but ive always wanted a yellow car. But dark metallic green or grey looks really good on these too...

Interesting car, imagine it flies and flexes!. Don't want to be that bloke but suspect like all metro/rover 100 you will find corrosion especially under the sill body kit.

That's a cool little car, bet it's a real riot to throw around some corners.
I did notice though that the fuel hose you used on the pump in the tank probably isn't rated for being submerged in fuel (which is also probably what happened to the old split hose). You might want to replace it with a section that is good for submersion or it will fail again.

Yeah taking off the body kit will be nail-biting, it had a full in and out respray 7 years ago and has been garaged until I bought it so I'm hoping it isn't too serious. Fingers crossed!! I've spotted a couple of fresh crusty bits recently...
