One off these is what I remember the most and had the most admiration for. Honda V6 sounded amazing. Mud flaps used to rub the road whist going quickly around roundabouts. Often got mistaken for a police car.

This is what my dad had....a 1977 MK1 Scirocco GLS. The car in the picture is identical....same colour, same wheels and bumpers etc. The registration was UPR 260S. He bought it in 1979 when I was two years old. No one ever believes me ( apparently I was too young )...but I genuinely remember the day that my Dad, Mum, my then baby sister and me went to pick it up from the dealer. Not the most practical car for a family of four ( which later became five ) to own. It was the car that dad taught my mum to drive in. I remember so fondly the hours of sitting in the back with my brother and sister as mum drove around In the evenings on ' L ' plates. He owned it for 13 years and only sold it because mum wanted something else.....a Ford Orion 1.6 Injection Ghia ( B490 TFX ). He and I absolutely loved the Scirocco.....I swear he shed a tear as the new owner disappeared off round the corner in it. Years later, I tried to find UPR 260S....but with luck. In the end I settled for an identical car in great original condition.....but a different colour ( green )....which I still own today, as well as a very early, very clean chrome bumper GLS in blue.

I can remember the following owned by my dad:Ford Consul, Zodiac/Zephyr (big finned rear wings?), Jag Mk2, Ford Zodiac executive, Rover P5B coupe, triumph 1300TC, Escort Mk2 1.6 auto , Triumph Acclaim auto, couple of Astra mk3 (?) and finally a Nissan Micra. He had some others I can't recall and gave up driving at aged 82 and sadly passed at 87 about 18 months ago.
Of all of those the Rover is my favourite, the reason i remember it most is not just the car itself with those big armchair seats and that lovely V8 soundtrack but I helped him change the engine in it over a weekend, one of the best car times I had with him.

My parents divorced in 1962 when I was just 8 years old, The first car I remember my dad owning was a prewar (1937?)Austin 16 DME 3, which my mum called "The Admiral's Barge" followed quite quickly by a 1954ish Austin Somerset and finally a rather exotic (for those days) Simca Aronde 1300 200TMH. My prime memory of this being him taking it on the newly opened M1 and having 100mph showing on the speedo 6 up (4 adults, my mum and dad plus nan and grandad and 2 small children)
My mum started learning to drive before I was born but didn't pass her test till I was 19 (on the 14th attempt and after I gave HER lessons) her cars were mostly bought by me with her money and were mostly uninspiring, a 1275 converted 59 Minor, a 67 Triumph 1300TC, A couple of Escorts, A VW Variant 1600 Fiat 127 and then a pair of Cavaliers.
But, by then, my tastes had already long calcified in mid or large saloons with a sporty edge, my first car was a 1956 MG Magnette ZA followed by a long succession of MKII and MKIII Zephyrs and Zodiacs, a couple of yank V8 Fords and another succession of Triumph 2000s and Dolomites, 3 of which I still own.
So my dads cars didn't influence my taste at all, though I parlayed his love of weekend underbonnet tinkering into a lifetime profession. I've been nuts about cars since I was 3 years old.

My dad had a pale blue 1500cc ford classic 3 door, mwc 803 he bought it when I was born in 1966 and it finaly went when I was 16. All my childhood holidays including all of the way to the south of france were in it. I only remember 2 breakdowns in all those years, a broken low tension wire and the column shift ball joint falling to pieces in Cornwall (fixed with araldite). After that he modernised to a mk2 cortina 1600, I used to love driving that, drove to all my uni interviews in it in the early 80's .
My first car was my grandad's anglia dhx 515a it was the only car I remember him having, ended up with a 1600gt, rocket box chopped lotus cortina suspension and dunlop alloys.

There are several. Mostly Alfa's But this one might be cool to mention. Its a Works Cooper S that was rebodied by John Cooper with a regular body. I know where it is and who owns it. Its been ( almost) within my grasp a couple of times, but that would have meant giving up one or more of my own cars. And I just wasn't prepared to do that. Now if I could snag a early '70s Renault 4TL like the one my mother had, I might go for it... ( not the car, but it was that color )

My dad was cool in the late 90s... I remember every car my parents had since I was born except the first one (Chevette). They had a rotten Mk1 Civic before that. Then: Estelle 105 Estelle 105 Sierra 1.6e Favorit Estate Escort Mk4 Belmont AX Astra Mk3 Astra Mk3 Estate Felicia Felicia Estate And during the 90's my dad had as second vehicles... Hillman Husky Austin Minivan Morris Oxford Cadillac Coupe DeVille Oldsmobile Cutlass Fiat Regata Austin Maestro Kawasaki GT550 LTD Spectre Honda 250 Superdream Honda 650 Deauville In the early 2000's then I started buying their cars for them... which were pretty much the same list all over again! Now they are in their early 60s and my mum drives a Subaru Forester, my dad a BMW 316i. 100% of my car addiction, beginnings of learning how to work on stuff (woodwork, bikes, cameras, anything at all), and whatever intelligence, business acumen and entrepreneurship I have came from them. Bonus picture for reading to the end!

My dad has owned many cars since I was born , the two I have great memories of, firstly a dark green Zephyr 4 bought form a showroom in the old Kent road south London I remember being in the showroom sitting in that massive finned car I must of been about five years old Same as this one Then forward to the long hot summer of 76 and my dad done the knowledge and became a black cab driver in London he must of been learning since 74 as he passed within two years I still remember his first cab and the night he brought it home EYK442J long gone according to dvla records He went in to own a good few more FX4 cabs before leaving the game I’d love to own a 70s one now My dad now 83 drives a Lexus IS250 But says the best car he ever owned was 1999 Rover 75 he had....oh and thanks dad those hours spent passing spanner’s and polishing cabs mean I’ve always been a petrolhead! That Z is a Mk3 iirc way cooler than the MK4 that replaced it. As for that Fuego posted earlier .... that's brought back a load of memories as well as my Mum had a black 1.7 auto one with an orange interior , I thought I was the dogs doodah's driving around in it whenever she let me.. great thread this

My dad was a Ford man through and through bar a Hilux that didn't last long, 3 door Cosworth when I was born, then a Sapphire Cosworth. He then had an RS500 as a "good car" and a base model 3 door Sierra in blue, that he put a warmed up 2.0 and 5 speed in, 1600e Rostyles, Cosworth grill and lower rear spoiler, and Recaros up front. I really really loved that car, when he sold my mums Cosworth I vividly remember her leaving the house keys on the car keys, cue an off the clock chase to catch up and get them back. Was sold in 2002 when the MND meant he couldn't switch pedals quick enough, was seen around 2 years later absolutely hanging in 2004, he'd have cried if he'd seen it. Last seen on ebay about 4 years ago as a half arsed Cossie Replica, tried to get the funds together to get it back between me and my bro but we couldn't sell our cars quick enough. I really really want another, but not identical to pay homage to my old man, way out my budget now though. His RS500 was super cool, but this is the car that did everything in my youth. Pre Cosworth grill there, and my mums identical (1 of 3 she had) behind. Weirdly remember nothing about those ones

My Dad wasn't really into cars. My earliest memory is of a, I think, Riley, followed by a blue beetle a green beetle and then a blue VW Variant which we used to drive back and forth from London to Cornwall where he was building a house. My Love of cars came from my Uncle John. He had many many cars as a car dealer back in the day ranging from an ex police Mk3 Zephyr which he took me on a high speed drive down an un opened section of the M1 (jeez I am old) to a bright orange Jenson Interceptor FF but the car that has stuck with me, and is to blame for my love of aircooled rear engine cars is this (not his one but same colour etc) When I was 17-18 I used to collect and deliver cars for him as a side job - my payment was I could take any car I wanted for the weekend provided I cleaned it and returned it with a full tank. This was the only car that would start one Friday night so I took it home with me. I hated it. The windows misted up, the gear change was awful and it was slow... After 3 months of me using it he asked if he could have it back - I still would have this over any other car ever made as my hate turned to a deep and passionate love affair which has never diminished. My first true love. He still owns it and has not seen the light of day for probably the past 10-15 years. As for the Beetle and Variant...Nah. P.

Spent from my mid teen years being ferried around in this SD1 Vitesse. Engine rebuilt and tuned to around 250bhp. A fairly rapid family car in its day, with a lovely soundtrack.

My dad never really had any influence on my petrolhead-ism, and I don't think I'd get that same kind of emotion that the chaps on the telly did if I was re-united with any of his old cars. For the most part, they were just bangers. A couple of granada's that barely worked, some Cortina, a Fiat Panda, the Sisley was alright. The only thing that he had that I thought was interesting was an Alfa 166. Most of these cars were just the £50 with T&T out of the paper jobs.
We had a family friend who had a Citroen BX, and a Rover 820 Vitesse Turbo. I remember the unusual interior of that one, and the Recaro seats. Wrote it off on the motorway pulling a caravan when the caravan flipped.
A friend of mine's dad was the one who shaped my cars. He had a Carlton GSI3000 24v, and then a yellow 850R. Used to go on holiday to wales in those cars, and his dad was handy behind the wheel. Would definitely pick one of either of those up if the chance arose. My dads cars? not so much.

My dad's not been one to buy a new car every couple of years. They've always been bought second hand and run until they died.
His mk1 bought in 1976 just after i was born, with me giving it a wash in around 1980. It was scrapped due to breaking its chassis at the rear spring mounts just before i turned 17 in 1993 otherwise it would have been mine as my first car.
He bought a C reg 1.6 Maestro in 1991 (seen behind my current beetle) and just used the escort to drive to work for the next 2 years as he could leave it anywhere and didn't worry if it got scratched.
He bought a mk3 fiesta after that and ran it until it was getting too long in the tooth so it was passed on to me and i traded it in for a passat estate. He bought a peugeot 206 after that and has recently got another to replace it so he's only on his 5th car since 1976.

That episode really tugged the heart strings. I've heard people be really harsh on Top Gear this season because they have had to make do with what they can due to the restrictions, but that one was A1 on the content. My old man had a few cars when I was younger. Datsun, MK2 Cavvy, but everyone remembers that ONE car, the one where all the memories come from. For me it was his 230E W123 Merc. More or less identical to this in colour and spec: A239 SSN reg, long since vanished from the ether or I'd have hunted it down simply for the nostalgia. He scrimped, saved, poured his life into a business and then when he finally felt safe enough to be extravagant he bought this car. I remember we got out in it for HOURS on our own for a test drive.. He paid four grand for it which, in the late 80s was a lot of money and for him, a self made lad from the rough end of Glasgow, a fortune. From a child to this day, I felt so proud that my dad owned that car. We staycationed for years in it. I remember being so impressed that it was automatic and had electric FRONT windows. My memories were bountiful as he held onto that car for near as damnit 15 years. I got to drive it briefly during my L plate days but not much as its auto box made it fruitless to learn driving in. Even then, being sat in it and driving when I could remember being sat in it a decade ago not reaching pedals or seeing out the window, it felt alien and a bit naughty. To this day, I have owned triple digits in cars, a few later mercs (202 probably the closest) but I have never felt ... well... correct in owning a 23E W123...
