I don't know how many of you have looked at the 2021 Census Forms that have dropped through our letterboxes in the last week or so.
There is an interesting question NO H14 on the form that asks "In total, how many cars or vans are owned, or available for use, by members of this household?" with tick boxes from 0 to 5 with a box to insert a number if over 5.
I wonder how this fits in with the users of this forum.
I don't want to know how many cars you own, but, I assume that several petrol heads, car collectors will easily exceed 5 cars plus daily drivers.
This could be interpreted as a question about, wealth, perceived status, environmental issues or simply the need for transport if you live in a rural location.
Your thoughts?

It could be for any number of reason, including the ones you've listed as well as seeing if parking for new homes matches current requirements. Only they'll know why the question exists, but probably don't!
They already know how many cars you own. They already know how many miles you drive them. They already know where you drive them. This just puts some of those details together in one Excel file. They probably wanted to add more questions but stopped in case the file got too big...
If anyone is really worried then I see only two viable options. Clone a car or buy a pogo stick.

It is a census, it is a data collection and collation exercise to inform future policy and thought. So if the data says car ownership is lowering in the country they can spend more money on public transport (or more likely just less money on roads).
If they were being "big brother" about it and wanted to know how many cars you own they can just query the DVLA database against your driver's license via your NI number.
As someone that occasionally analyses data for a living I suspect they are drawing relationships between geography, household size, income and car ownership.

Thing is, do they really know what vehicles you’ve got/own? As they say a V5 is no proof of ownership, plus if you own a ltd company (as I do) which has numerous vehicles owned by it & registered to its address.

We've had that question on the census forms for a while here in New Zealand. I've never been quite sure how to answer it. Do they want to know about the total number of motor vehicles owned by the household, the ones that are complete and in regular use, or just those few that are completely road legal?

My thoughts? It’s very Big Brother are my thoughts. They want to know everything about you so they can screw you. They tell you it’s all for your good, yeh right Don’t tell them your name Pike! However you look at it you have a legal obligation to complete the census, no one will be concerned if you have 2,4 or 6 vehicles, the data is used to look back at trends/statistics and to project future statistics for things such as planning, spending etc etc If you think about all the information you provide unknowingly to the government through NI and Tax for example, and other public and private companies it’s quite staggering. The MID knows how many vehicles you have insured and submitted value, DVLA hold Taxed v’s SORN, MOT history is held centrally, your telco provider knows who you call and when and Alexa knows more than you know!!!

But back to the cars, yes I’m sure they know what you have sorned/taxed/mot’d etc etc. But do they tie everything together without you telling them? I’m not sure they do.

If you put 'more than 5' it then asks you how many, so we counted up for our household of 3 petrolheads and 4 regulars. Turns out if you put '32' a little box pops up and says 'there apears to be something wrong with your answer, please enter a number 20 or less' And honestly, I really wouldn't worry about this being Big Brothery. HoTWire's dead right that all it'll be used for is informing stuff like roadworks and public transport strategy, or public policy around trying to get the more deprived people in the country mobile (one of the main drivers of deprivation is that it costs money to travel to jobs, which if you don't have a job or your job is poorly paid you can't afford). The worst thing they might do from our perspective is target some of the environmental policies they're already planning to do a bit better, which TBH is a positive set of policies that just so happen to affect our hobby (and they've proven to be pretty reasonable around with their previous policies).

I’m not sure they do. Do you own a smart phone, if you do then it knows more than Alexa and listens to you intently, if you don't then you are still tracked wherever you go so either way you can't beat them, whoever "them" are

Google... to sell you adverts. This dystopian future is very dull, it is just here to show you stuff that you probably already bought on Amazon because they are smart enough to know what you want, but not smart enough to know you already bought it after you saw the advert the first time. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNYWAY ... this is a good FYI for people filling in the cenus, BUT contains nothing that makes me want to go out and do car stuff, so lets get some cool old car threads going instead.

By "Owned, or available for use" it's referring to stuff parked on your drive that you use- so the shopping runabout hatchback, the family SUV and the company supplied van.
They don't care in the slightest about your barn full of chod, you're a statistical anomaly and can happily be ignored.
Hopefully they'll use it to establish things like "in relatively rural areas where people generally work 20+ miles away from home and the bus routes go through every town and village so take an hour to go 10 miles, it's bloody daft to build estates of 3 and 4 bed houses with 1.5 parking spaces per house and no extra on street parking". But I doubt it.

Sadly swmbo filled ours in, I'm firmly of the opinion they can shove the census where the sun doesn't shine.

But I doubt it. Bus routes if at all connected, my village does not even have a bus route. and in all seriousness it's not remote!
