Greetings colleagues. I’ve got a 1955 Standard 10 in the garage which is gradually coming back to life. It will be a bit quicker when I’ve finished it. I’m uprating a fair bit of stuff to make it less of a hazard and am now thinking about the rear axle.
It’s 4x3.75” pcd (95.25 mm) which is the same as the Marina, Dolomite, Toledo and TR7. All have wider rear axles than the axle in the Ten. The advantage is I can get a choice of taller diff ratios, stronger half shafts and bigger drums.
The Standard runs lever arm dampers and cart springs, no other axle location. Not particularly worried about modifications to the axle casing for dampers and springs, it’s the width I’m thinking about.
My search skills are a bit rubbish today. I’ve seen how the axle tubes can be shortened, but what about half shafts? How tricky are they to cut down and re spline? Or could someone supply a stronger half shaft and I keep the current axle?

It depends on a few factors. Tapered shafts are difficult/impossible to re-spline. Axles with splines larger than the shaft diameter cannot be re-splined. Heat treatment can be an issue. I've just found a picture of TR7 shafts and it looks like the spline is larger than the shaft diameter so custom shafts it is! The Standard 10 axle is known for being a bit fragile, it caused issues in S2 Lotus 7's with tuned pre-crossflows. I have made my own shafts by converting the hub end to a press fit (20 ton press needed) on a machined down shaft but it's not a diy job unless you have a sodding great lathe and a big press. This was a hybrid 4HA/English axle.

Thanks - I have a 30 ton press, but a small lathe! I’ll keep researching.

Would a CV equipped diff and some TF drive shafts be worth investigating.

Have you looked into an axle out of a 105 Anglia?
Its pretty narrow ( compared to a Cortina or Mk1 Escort ), Good range of ratios available, LSD's, etc.
Changing the wheel bolt pattern might be easier than narrowing a axle.
Specially if it is a less common one.

There are 2 types of TR7 axle, 4 speed cars had a marina based one, 5 speeds were based on the sd1 and are much stronger, the sd1 cwp fits in them so you can have a tr7 or sd1 ratio.

Try these people. They cut, shorten and friction weld shafts back together. I have heard the results are good. www.cpsdrivelink.co.uk/
