Do you have, on your channel, a simple idiots’ guide to setting up a sewing machine and stitching something really basic? Hi, Ditto. Mum taught us how to do lots of household skills as children (Knit, sew, crochet cook and bake) but not keeping it up over time and her not being around for the last 10 years they have mostly gone now. I bought a sewing machine a couple of years ago (Singer 99K) and tried to use it with not much success, so put it to one side. So a bit of a tutorial would be most helpful. Colin Edit: Must type faster. Thanks, I will go back a study that when it's a bit less manic here and/or quieter evenings. I just hope there's not going to be a test. There are Youtube videos explaming setting the tension of these machines. yours is from around 1955. I have a Singer from 1935.which is a sewing machine without an electric motor. When i got it, i had to clean the moving mechanism but after that it worked like new. These machines are so well build and needles ect are still plenty to buy. These machines are capable of stitching almost everything. I made a new carperset for my Rover P5 and restitched the main seams on the seat and other interior bits like the headlining and a vinyl sunroof. I did not have any experience with sewing machines but was happy with the result although it took a lot of time. A fast industrial would have been to fast and these are fairly expensive to buy and i would not know if such a machine would be OK. I payed Euro 60,- for it along with an instruction manual from the 1930 s with lot of accesorries. It also had an Singer electric motor fitted afterwards. I got it working but its not so powerfull so i use the food and hand "power"

That's a really nice job on that interior, an awful lot of work to get it all looking that tidy.

Did some woodwork. I'm not very good at woodwork. Used some stuff we found in the loft to make some 70s office furniture type stuff.

Modification is all part of the sewing game. This time I've modified a pattern I bought so extensively that it's essentially a new pattern now. Scarlet trousers, because loud (leg) pipes save lives.

"sewing machines seem to have a rudimentary level of intelligence, rather like a cat, and will do their best to go wrong when you have a deadline looming only to be perfectly fine when you don't" Gold! I have a lovely pfaff machine my mum gave me. I used to use it as a lad to make little bags for my mtbs (before bike packing became a thing....) and it gets used every so often for fixing clothes /making curtins. I'll get a pic of it. Its just old enough to be made in 'west germany'

my sewing machine is sexist. at least my wife tells me it is. I get on just fine with it, she can't use it without it jamming up and going all mental. her machine is a new brother which does all sorts of fancy tricks, mine is a 70s bamber. her machine wont stitch heavy fabrics, mine will stitch anything from leather to gossamer.

Tomorrow's video is going to be all about copying. I'm taking a much loved waistcoat that needs repair and using it to make a pattern and a whole new waistcoat without dismantling the original. Hopefully it'll be handy for anyone reading that wants to know the basics of backwards engineering clothing, especially if there's something you've got that you like and can't get a replacement for. I'll also be working with velvet which I don't recommend if you're new to sewing. Lovely fabric to wear, terrible to work with.

Time for something completely different. A nice easy project this one. I've also been working on a rescue project. I got hold of a very badly moth damaged tweed jacket and have been repurposing that into a waistcoat. Mock-up done today and it looks like it's going to work nicely. Was also nice to use up some fabric that's been in the stash for a while waiting for a purpose.

The only sewing requirement in this project is two straight lines of stitches. Nice and easy for building confidence with your machine and some very basic fabric fitting and understanding of how fabric behaves. This is probably even easier than making a pillow case, and very handy if you've a caravan in need of curtains.

Bought myself a Marks and Spencer's tweed jacket in a charity shop. Up until now I've always been able to trust the size on the label is the size it is, so I didn't bother to try it on. I was also in a rush so I didn't spot the moth damage until I got home either. Oh well, can't exactly return it and it wasn't exactly expensive, so let's make something out of it.
Tailoring basics - I considered taking the jacket in to fit me, so I go over some of that and how you alter a garment to fit better.
Pattern Drafting - After figuring out what I wanted to make, I then had to make the pattern fit the fabric I actually had in the garment. This can be something of a challenge.
Waste Not Want Not - I used up whatever I had in stock where possible on this one both to keep costs down and to get some storage space for new projects.
All in all, the waistcoat ended up costing less than a tenner, and I've still got a useful amount of tweed left over for future projects.

And now for something completely different. Some folks here already I know I paint tiny nerdy things (and that's a tiny nerdy reference to a very good channel) and have been asking for vid content. I'm not properly set up for it yet, recording tiny stuff is its own set of challenges and I'm lacking in relevant equipment at the moment.
HOWEVER. I do have an absurd kitbash I've just started.

The response to the last video was better than I expected so I did another better one which is coming out next week. We'll be going back to 1989 and doing something very heavy from start to finish. Should hit a few nostalgia buttons for anyone into D&D.
For the sewing side of things, my work room has just been jam packed with other work responsibilities so I haven't had the space to focus on that. Furniture projects have been hampered by the weather so had stalled, but now the warmer drier days are here I should be able to make better progress there.
I did take a little break recently and I'm glad folks stuck with the channel in the meantime. Back to the usual schedule now at least and I'm always picking up new projects to tinker with. Some are just easier to turn into videos than others, and some I just want to enjoy as a project rather than having to go to the effort and extra time of recording it.

Sew What has taken on a life of its own when it comes to content. I've not been able to do much in the way of sewing due to space constraints in the work room and not having good windows of opportunity for filming. A sewing video is a HUGE time investment, and I simply haven't had the time available. That's why I've been diversifying into all sorts of random craft stuff. That's also why tomorrow's video is going to take you through the painting of this really old miniature.

Let me know what you think of this one. I don't get a lot of feedback on videos so I'm never really sure what I'm getting right or wrong beyond the statistics Youtube provides.
This time my first attempt at working with a resin miniature, and having a go at some experimental paint choices. Took a different filming approach with this one too, so it's more action shot based of me actually painting something rather than the finished stages as in the dragon video.

Restoration of a 1964 Lincoln Continental this time.
I know, I'm off track from the sewing and woodwork stuff. Honestly, it's about getting something out there every week at the moment and the sewing and woodwork need a greater investment of funds and time than I currently have so I'm just having a go with whatever smaller projects I have lying about until something sticks.

Something a bit different this time around. Repairing a little rabbit and making a smart little waistcoat. Briar the bunny is destined to live in the Lanchester.

Ever wanted to know how to paint bronze? Here's one way. He's a big lad this Kragnos fellah. Shown here with a can of pop for scale. There's a lot of work on this one, he's a big lad.
