OK, I let myself have an idle moment (entirely by accident) about 2 days ago and it focused on this:
This is a 2002 Land Rover Discovery 2 TD5 manual with 212k and more dents than a dented thing.
It drives OK but has a few niggly things. Niggles that matter on a daily, like sticky brake lights and a sloshy gearchange.
In my mind it was too rough to sell. So I thought I might break it.
However, the running gear is, essentially, OK. The chassis is a good one, hence buying it, and it has a few new parts like dampers and sway bars already fitted by previous (mechanic) owner.
I don't mind the 5cyl diesel stove up front and it mates well with the hi/lo box and 5 spd manual.
So, my question to you is, if / when I remove the shabby body, what are you putting on top of the chassis?
For reference it is a 100" wheelbase.
I have already gone through pretty much everything I have sitting around right now and it's all too small, or too big, or too common (as in, it's already been done a few times).
I'd like something different, but practical, that can be well enough finished, but not showroom level pristine.
I'd initially though about a car body, but after chatting with one of my staff who is also very creative, we've talked ourselves down more of this kind of route:
I like the practicality of the dropside bed, and the bonus is that it's something ready made and obtainable second-hand.
I would prefer to recycle stuff I can get locally, cheaply, so importing a Skoda 1203 body to polp on top, whilst perfection IMO, is not likely at the moment. I just want to find a creative way to do something with what is essentially a "spare" car/chassis and could be something cool.
By the way, I have another Discovery 2 with a jammed back door that will, one day, become a pickup, so we'll leave that idea to one side for now. If anyone had thought of that already, thank you, great idea, they look amazing and would answer all the things, but that will happen with another one already.
So, get your creative juices going folks, hopefully someone can come up with a great idea or three and hopefully this can keep someone entertained for an hour or two while you're imprisoned!
