Just last week, siha announced that for the second year running, Techno Classica wouldn't be happening. I'd expected it, of course. But the possibility of it happening helped me to survive the winter. I first went in 2017 and was so overwhelmed by it that I figured I'd make it an every few years deal. By 2019 I was absolutely choking to get back and for 2020 I'd managed to organise five of us going. But I digress. April 2017 and I'd been living in the Netherlands for a few months and had managed a few things already - could text while cycling, was able to eat bitterballen without destroying the roof of my mouth, and had developed a pathological hatred of Belgium, but still went to the Freddy Files in Ninove. I'd always been comfortable with the ease of travel, and Essen is only three hours away. I'd travelled further for one day things before.
Phoned my pal, Peter, and the conversation went roughly like this:
'Essen?'
'Yep, just booked the ferry. You got space for one more?'
And so it was that a few months later, we were jump starting my GTI off my old Range Rover. The one we were going to use until we found out that we'd be fined if we drove it into Essen. Damn. Still, I'm sure it's just lack of use and the battery will be absolutely fine...
A couple of hours later and we've peeled off the Autobahn for some proper petrol.
