I’m starting a new project soon Red block in a sunbeam And I’m trying to find an axle to take around 250/300 hp and be reliable on a few track days
Does anyone know anyone who has swapped Volvo/ford etc The sunbeam will be arched so width shouldn’t be a problem Just value for money really and have or be able to fit lsd

I think the standard axle is probably ok at that sort of power. Maybe a bit marginal at the upper end of your estimate if you're giving it a hard time. I read that the Bullet Sunbeam (Cosworth engine) used a standard axle until he got over 280bhp. I'm not sure if it was changed because it failed or as a precautionary measure before he went crazy on power.

The standard axle will take those sort of powers but depends on tyre grip but the diff is weak so fitting an LSD of some sort is a good move. Also the pinion can get a bit fragile if you go for a low ratio.
The Rallying fraternity generally change to an Atlas.
Volvo 240 is a good choice (Dana 30 type - early) if you are handy with the welder.

Thankyou for the reply I’ve been looking into the 4ha from the jag as I believe these are very strong and also have a power lock lsd I think. They were also fitted to the works sunbeam However I think they are to long and it’s bloody difficult trying to find out what width I need The car will have forest arches fitted
The atlas is indeed a lovely thing but at 4ki ish it’s a last resort

Something like a Nissan Terrano/Navara or Toyota Hilux would be ideal. Most come with a plate type LSD and are cheap and plentiful. The only difficult part is making (or modifying) some hubs to take normal car wheels.

The Salisbury is very heavy and actually i would suggest no cheaper than an Atlas. The Sunbeam ears would need to be replicated on the Salisbury centre and as its cast it needs specialist welding. The Scimitar SE5 i think is the narrowest of the axles and will fit a Sunbeam easily - i think. The SE6 is wider. The Jag Mk2 is a similar size. As far as I'm aware the cost of parts and the axles them selves is in the same ball park as the Atlas.
In the old days people used to fit English drive shafts to the Sunbeam casing, may even of been the diff as well but not the CWP. Ive never seen one just read about it once.
The Dana 30/Volvo 240 (early) will take suspension ears by Mig welding at home. My mate Big Jim did it on his car and said they were really easy to weld as the centre seems to be a cast steel rather than cast iron.
However, why not just keep the standard axle? With road tyres and a sensible diff ratio like a 3.9 or 3.7 the CWP will last. The diff centre would need to be an LSD for strength. The drive shafts appear to be really strong actually. Although the part numbers say they are all the same there are some stronger shafts about which have a thicker shaft.
If you run 250hp i would have thought it would be reliable on road tyres (I'm thinking normal 185 or 205 here). 300hp then may be the shafts would start needing to be looked after. It might be worth a try, it would at least get you going??
Or look out for a Cortina Atlas and stick stuff from Rally Design in it. That would be way less than £4K
