Assuming that you don't need to daily it, the Trabant makes a very good cheap classic! Although prices are on the rise now, so jump in while they're still sub-£1,000 for one needing work. A good one will set you back north of £2,500-3,000 now. They're easy to maintain (owing to simple mechanics), parts are cheap and plentiful (mostly available from Germany and Hungary) and the owners' club is very active. Plus, they're a lot more interesting than most cars available for £2,000 (though obviously not the most dependable).

I've watched Aging Wheels on the Trabant, it looks like a decidedly unenjoyable thing to drive, as interesting as they are!

I've only ever driven one around Berlin and it was hilarious. Quicker than you'd expect and revvier than a Vtec. Horrible seating position, though. And a horrible gearbox. Can't imagine dailying one but can very much imagine modifying one...

There’s still plenty of proper cool stuff out there if you look hard enough. I paid a bag for this. It would probably have gone through a test as it was if you were brave/stupid enough to drive it round on 25 year old tyres and brakes. It ran and everything worked, no real rust and 40k from new. Even me being super picky about everything and replacing absolutely everything perishable including all suspension bushes and brakes, a stainless exhaust, buying some period soviet accessories and some fairly expensive wheels, it’s still under £2k.

Amazing isn't it. I only started driving in the 00's and the first five or so years i got hold of all sorts of interesting stuff for under £1000 road legal. If you gave me a grand now to buy something I think i'd end up with a decent push bike. Anything i would have had is now mostly £5k-£10k!

I bought a 106 Quiksilver a few years ago for £200, I don't know what they're worth now as I couldn't find one in my search but I'm betting it's more than that. Prices have gone nuts for anything pre-2001 recently, including my daily which has at least doubled in value over 12 months.

Bending the rules quite a bit here but wanted to see how old a car we could get for the budget No MOT, but being over 40 years old I'm using the exemption to get around that. Running issue but ad says engine was rebuilt and other photos suggest the engine is back in the car, so best case, a weekends tinkering to get it running? This is also assuming the body is in decent shape and the brakes etc...

I've searched and failed on various attempts so all this thread is going to get me is a load of spam emails from ebay asking me if I'm still interested in <insert random marque and model> or telling me it could be mine today I told you...

Now the thing is there are plenty of cars out there still That are interesting enough to modify you just have to look well away from eBay now ....waste of time really If you want to buy in a budget do exactly as I’ve done for over 30 years Knock a few doors or leave notes I’ve bought countless cars this way cheaply It’s been a bit difficult during the lockdown obviously to do that But I’ve got a couple I know of tucked away up driveways I’m just waiting for the right time to have a sniff at them
