I'm considering using an FM modulator in my car. For those not familiar, it's a little device that you plug your MP3 player, memory stick, CD player or whatever into and it transmits the sound in FM waves, which is then picked up by your aerial and played through your stereo. Sounds good! But do they work?! You can get a cheap one for less than a fiver on fleabay so I suppose I'm not losing out if it turns out to be curse word. I'm sick of lugging around CD's and fumbling around changing them - plugging my phone into the car and choosing from a bajillion choons at the touch of a button seems like a much better idea! Anyone used them before?

Erm, if they're as bad as those tape things you can plug an ipod or a cd player into, they'll be curse word. Seriously, I'm using one on the Jag at the moment and its just rubbish. Take a punt and let us know how it sounds.

Yes. I bought one off eBay for about a fiver 2 years ago. It's a great little widget. Quality is acceptable (much better than those crud tape adaptors), but not perfect.
The only downsides are: (a) in traffic jams you pick up interference from other peoples ones (b) they are a bit fiddly. Set up some playlists on yer pod before you set sail.

I have just bought an MP3 player with an FM transmitter built in off the Bay and that works fine for me in both my cars and at work on a portable

Brought one about a month ago off Play.com. Tis an awesome little thing Only trouble I've ever had with it is in between M5 J4a -> J3. For some reason the radio would pick up Radio2 no matter what frequency you set it at. Apart from that, its great!

Mondeo came with an old Longmill 10 disc that runs through a modulator. I've had no probs at all with it, works great, good sound, no interference . I was told years ago that they aren't good if you're a bass head tho, as they chop off some of the lower frequencies but as I'm still running stock Ford paper cones, thats an advantage!

Thanks for the replies fellaZ!
I've got a five year old Goodmans Argos special... it's enough for me. I like my music, but I'm not really that ar$ed about some awesome system that costs more than my car! ;D It has no AUX input, so I'm stuck with CD's at the moment. Being able to carry 1Gb or more of music in my pocket and carry on listening to it when I get out of my car would be ideal!
Sounds like an FM modulator is the way forward then. I need to sort my aerial out as a) it's an automatic one that stopped working a few years ago, and b) it's not attached to the head unit any more. ;D

Did W115s come with auto aerials? Do you need a new one? I might know someone who's got something for you if so.
iTrips are meant to offer excellent sound quality and cost around £30. Hope that helps!

I changed the wings and fitted an aftermarket auto one on the rear wing. This has also stopped working. I've never bothered fixing it as I never listen to the radio, but now I may need one! What ya got? ;D

I had an iTrip, which I always seemed to get (typically) very acceptable results with - but it does entirely depend upon the car you're in, where its aerial is and what form it takes (i.e. in-screen/pillar/extendable etc). Unfortunately it dropped dead last week (irritatingly) and I replaced it with another unit which is just useless, so on the lookout for another iTrip at the moment as the current thing totally fails in my car!

you can get a brand new headunit off ebay for about 30 quid that'll have an aux input in it, be much less hassle than having the RF thingy plugged in or having to keep putting batteries in it I reckon.
I plug my phone direct into my amps through an rca extension lead.

I got an electric one that I wired into the remote lead that went to my amp somewhere at home. I got a beesting-type affair on mine atm with no desire to cock around rewiring that one up again.
Next show, remind me to bring it.

if you can run to it i really would go for the head unit option i tried a few of these cheap things and they really got on my tits far too much fiddling about and hassle i got one of those cheapy headuntis off ebuyer.co.uk and its really good well worth the money then dotn bother with the hassle of an aerial
if moneys tight buy one of those fm transmitters but just bung an aerial under the dash somewhere should pick up the signal easy then

They have worked well in everything I have used them in apart from the benz, the aeiral is mounted on the rear wing, with some heafty bits of metal between it and the FM modulator sat between the seats at the front.
Cherryturbojames' idea of having the aerial somewhere up front would solve that though.

we have one which we use at shows. run it from a laptop and tune all the cars to the same frequency. All the cars on the stand play the from the same playlist in time. works really well, but doesn't show off any multimedia systems....

I found one to be fine for tootling localy, but had to constantly re-tune it on longer runs as the assigned frequency it used would pick up interference from the local redneck radio stations. Changing frequency would work fine till I came within range of another station on a similar frequency. In the end I dumped it and got a 2nd hand Alpine headunit off ebay that has aux inputs. It cost me £40 inc postage and the sound quality is fantastic. Also, if your existing headunit has cd changer controls, it is often possible to get an adaptor that plugs your mp3 into the cd changer input on the headunit. My van came with a Blaupunkt cassette player but had cd changer inputs. I got a pin diagram for the connector from the net and made up a wee lead that allows me to plug the player into the headunit. Worked well till some fud (me) disconnected the battery to work on the car and then realised he didnt have the security code for the stereo

don't go for cheap knock offs if you have a IPOD, Get the proper versions created under license by Griffin. The sound quality is fine, ok not as good as using the iLINK attachment but livable.
Griffin bring out new models by the month, I have the one which fits to the bottom of the NANO G3, and had a plate, which acts as the ariel that goes up the back of the iPOD, it seems better than the old type that sit at the bottom of the POD or are on a cable.
Also to change the frequency there is no longer a dial on the iTRIP, it merges with the iPOD's interface, so less curse word about.
The cheap Phono type are pants, I have just changed my head unit to one with a iLINK, so if you have a IPOD and wanna try my Griffin then let me know fella.
