The rules this place has are what has kept it together and growing for 17 years Agreed, but long term those rules will kill it off too. The pool of cars will grow ever smaller and unaffordable and the users will go elsewhere because, as I said in my other post, to maintain interest long term (especially with young 'uns) you need a way to 'buy in' or you'll lose interest pretty rapidly, no matter how much you like the subject matter. It needs a slow, rolling entry point for cars, when they reach the point of being 'retro', which all cars inevitably will be. It's all tied in with nostalgia, the cars you grew up with or that your dad owned etc and the cars some are saying don't count now, will count in 17 years time. It's the ethos that maintains this place, not necessarily rules around age/cut-offs. Even modern stuff here is interesting, unlike Piston heads for example, where it seems (to me) to be t***s with cheque books who scoff at young lads buying the 1.4 model because 'it's not the 2.5 engine so it's automatically s**t mate' ...

It has evolved over time and the age limit has expanded but I'm just not sure it's crept up to 2011 yet

Sorry you edited your post to add the above so I'm going to respond to that I not going to defend PH on here (pointless trying to change peoples minds) but that last bit in bold is about as blinkered as a post on PH that says "RR is cut springs and old dross that shouldn't be on the road" So I'll leave just a few links to some interesting threads on PH BMW 2002 - just startingSaab 900 Turbo - living with oneClassic Mini - with a twistE30 Touring with boostCheck them out and then you'll know what section to look for others you might like - it's pretty much the only place I read threads on PH

If you venture away from the car sections you will find no end of knobbers who seem to exist only to argue with each other, and in the car section you get a wide range from "I need to buy a diesel hatchback for my gran should I get a Civic or a Corsa" to "here is my 320d company car" to "I am homebuilding a 540HP NA 7L V12 3 seater" (yes, really - www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=47&t=1827105). Whereas Retro Rides seems to have a much more cohesive vibe - which seems to be more focussed on modding than PH, and probably more on lower value cars that the owner has spent a lot of time / blood / sweat / tears / money on rather than "here's my ferrari 250 gt spyder that's going to sit in my heated dehumidified garage and never get driven anywhere".

Just that it's my experience from what I've seen, which over the course of about a dozen threads was enough to put me off bothering to look anywhere else on there. Still, I see E30 Touring and BMW 2002 listed in your post, so that's a good start. I'll have a look-see.

It is worth noting that we did an event with Pistonheads once, at Le Mans Classic, their venue had let them down so we co-operated with them and they joined up with our event. Was very nice indeed and the chaps from Pistonheads were very nice. Wish I had their resources available sometimes *sigh*.

Was a good event too - lovely setting - great variety of cars and not a hint of the "them and us"

May just mean if i do anything interesting to the Boxster ('04) it may or may not qualify as interesting Well, if you did anything even remotely like what Casey Putsch has done to the last two Boxsters he's had his hands on then I'm sure folk would be more than interested! Maybe not so much the Lykan build which whilst interesting, is probably too new for here but the King Zero build would definitely fit the bill here

That's why I enjoy browsing RR, there's simply no section where you can go off on some political tangent or wade into 'general chat' etc, which in my experience of several well known forums way back when, creates cliques that bleed into every section (including build threads) and real life meets, creating a general vibe/ambience that promotes exclusivity and negativity. In my (entirely subjective) opinion, Pistonheads falls foul of that unfortunate malaise. Yes you can filter it out and 'ignore it' but it's there nonetheless and who needs it? That's why I avoid such places like the plague, they are often like Mumsnet with pictures of cars. I did like the E30 Touring though, a nice read, cheers.

PH forum software is very interesting (if you are logged in you can customise your access to only see what you want to see and nothing else - including when you click on what's new) - it's not really the topic for here so if you want to know how to do that chuck me a message and I'll ping a few screenshots showing how

Has anyone ever noticed the number of moderators this place has in relation to the users online? This place should be overrun with spam, fights and idiots. It really shouldn't work. But it does.
I'll also point out that I got the Herald in 2006 and didn't join here until 2013. I'd found this site before and never joined it. I don't remember why for any exact reason, but I remember feeling it just wasn't for me. Maybe I saw a fight or a few posters I didn't like reading.
I guess the point I'm making is that just because a forum doesn't fit you right now doesn't mean it's a bad one. This place is pretty much the only forum I use now.

I came on here after a bad experience with a classic car owners club and I’ve always felt at home, no judgment on here, I’ve never found it clicky and I’ve made some very close friends over the years. Where else can you read about a Model AA truck or a Citroen Cactus in the same place, I personally love the way it’s evolving with a mixture of stuff and long may it continue.

Some of it does bleed through now and again (but then it is the way of the world), but I'll agree that it does improve the experience alot. But that's not what this thread is about mind you . I found r129sl's threads interesting on there, as well as our own Nik Da Greek's thread. Helix402 has been very helpful to me over there to be fair.
