After a couple of years retroless, I've bought myself a project!
I've wanted a Coupe 20VT for a while, and as one of the few cars on my want list that's still affordable I decided this year would be a good time to get one. After doing quite a bit of research and speaking to a few people, the general message I got was 'buy the best you can buy'. With that in mind I aimed to have a decent chunk of money saved up by summer to get a really, nice example. However, because i'm impatient and buying cars is too much fun, I've bought myself a complete project instead!
I saw it for sale on Instagram of all places, and within 48hrs of seeing it had sent a deposit.
Positives: Only 66,000 miles 2 owners One of my ideal colours It runs (apparently very well) It has no major rust (apparently) It was cheap if all the above proves to be correct
Negatives: It hasn't been on the road for a decade It has failed 2 attempted MOTs in that time It's pretty battered and needs a full respray due to horrendous laquer peel I've only seen in a few photos and a 3 minute walkaround video
Either way, it's being picked up by a random internet transporation service and arriving on my driveway in just over a weeks time.
I've had a good chat with the current owner, and he's given me a list of work that it needs. All of which seems manageable, maybe, hopefully...
Further updates will follow once I see it in person for the first time!

I’ve just been sent this - which means tomorrow morning it should be on my driveway. Which also means it’s time for a to-do list - So for MOT it definitely needs - Side lights not working Dip beam works washer pump - check battery earths and relays New Exhaust Replace Fuel tank straps Replace NSF hub and hopefully nothing else! Then the important stuff to do - Bonnet struts CHOD Bonnet pull Oil pressure warning light stays on after ignition turned off - which I have read is a sign the alternator is failing Blower motor not working Cambelt and aux belts Hopefully after all the above is done, it’ll be on the road for summer then over next winter it’ll be in for a full respray

Certainly a car that I'd like to own if the chance ever comes about.
Yours looks like a great base for a good'un. Good luck with the project.
Bookmarked.

Officially one week of Coupe ownership today! Turned up last Tuesday, on time and largely as expected. There's a crease in the LHR wing that I wasn't aware of but as the whole car is pretty battered, it doesn't really matter. A full respray will definitely be on the cards once it's mechanically sound, as it does look very sorry itself at the moment! So far I've replaced the bonnet struts as using a plank of wood to keep the very heavy bonnet open was getting annoying. Next step was to look into the electrical issues with the lights and washers. Upon removing the fusebox I found it was quite badly corroded in places, and the pin for the washer pump was burnt around the bottom. Nice easy fix then.. I sourced a replacement fuse box from the local Coupe specialist (very usefully only 25 minutes away!) and fitted it to the car. However when I turned the ignition I had no power at all to any of the body electrics - instrument panel, lights, wipers, windows etc It would start and run fine however. After a few days of head scratching, checking other fuses and relays around the car, looking at wiring diagrams and mainlt wondering why I bought a stupid project in the first place, I decided to recheck all the fuses I had swapped over. I found one of the 'service' fuses was not blown but did have enough light corrosion on the blades to stop it from doing anything - swapped one in from elsewhere in the fusebox and most of my car came back to life - much to my relief. I'm going to get a box of brand new fuses and replace all the fuses in the box, then I can properly assess if I've fixed my electrical issues once and for all. Also, I've been filling the boot full of parts, including a lovely new stainless steel exhaust. The offending fusebox

Among ordering some fuses, I’ve also ordered an alternator, both aux belts and all the tensioners from Autodoc - and then realised i’m probably going to get stung for import charges and it’ll take weeks to reach me. It hopefully will still work out still then ordering from the UK and I was struggling to find an alternator anywhere else anyway. Searching through the book pack has thrown up a couple of bonuses. The cambelt and waterpump was replaced in 2018, so that’s ok for another 2 years (and has only done about 100 miles on these). Equally exciting is this little guy: It’s a chip from the ECU, the only reason this would be sitting in the bookpack is if it had been replaced with an aftermarket one. The main one that people seem to fit is a GTec, which with the stainless exhaust i’m going to fit should mean it’s running around 250bhp rather than the standard 220bhp. Free power!

Nice find, good to read about another Fiat Coupe on here. I have a bit of a soft spot for these cars.
Good luck with the resto.
Cheers Col.

Nice motor, they look great in red when it's fresh and polished. Hopefully one day, when it’s got more than 75% of the paintwork with laquer on it!

Good news that the cambelt is already done - officially an engine out job, but the specialists have found a way round it. Like they usually do!
Was easy enough on my Stilo Abarth - same engine, no turbo. That goes like a rocket, so I can only imagine how a lighter car with boost must be.

Fuses arrived yesterday and have now been fitted, great news is 95% of the electrical issues are resolved - and all of the important ones. The heater blower even sprang into life which is something I had on my list to sort. The only remaining issue is the RH door mirror doesn't adjust, but the motor whirs when the rear demister is used. I assume there's some damaged wiring somewhere, but as neither are important i'll just add it to the list of nice-to-haves rather then must-be-dones. Celebrated this positve step to MOT worthyness by cleaning the interior, which is remarkably tidy for 22 years old and really needs nothing more than some of the trims tidying up, and a stereo upgrade. Now once the alternator and associated parts turn up I can get my mate to do the stuff I can't/don/t want to do, and hopefully then get an MOT on it. Would be lovely to have it properly on the road in the next month or so.

No real progress on the Coupe for a while now. I have carried out a rear wiper ‘delete’ so it now looks alot cleaner from the rear. I’ve also found an OE front strutbrace from the latest limited edition models, so this will be fitted in due course. Obviously it makes sense to buy non-essential parts for a car that isn’t driveable yet! I have had some time to play with my daily and autotest car, my Panda 100HP. I saw another thread about one on RR but as it’s quite modern I thought I’d tack it onto this one and can add more info if people are interested. Yesterday was fitting on some 15inch steelies with slightly taller 50 profile tyres, I personally love the look of painted steelies and they’ll be staying on all year round!

Finally got round to another few tiny jobs on the Coupe - fitted the strut brace and removed the old stereo and CD changer (sold them for £50 so added some more money into the project pot) More importantly it’s now booked in at the local specialist for the start of May to get the remaining jobs done (including an ally rad that I ordered today) so hopefully I can start driving it pretty soon! In the meantime I’ve been out and about in the Panda, and must say I love how it looks on it’s steelies.
