Just as the world changed, I bought a spares or repairs project, heavily modified with an iffy provenance. Once home with it, I started cleaning and fiddling. Under layers of grime and paint i found the vin number Since it was vw based, a search online showed it to be based on a 58/59 beetle Next search was isitnicked.com which showed not stolen and registered as a beach buggy in 1972 Tried a couple of vin to reg services on eBay with no luck so gave up searching Couple of days ago tried using a search service on Facebook, result, 5 pounds and 10 minute later Full registration, date of registration, currently sorn, the full run down Now the bad bit An image search for the registration brings up a picture of a beach buggy a Very different beach buggy With the help of the buggy forum the owner of that buggy has been contacted and am waiting for results Does anyone have any experience of a similar situation Ps my vin is clear, undamaged and with additional vw identifications Ttfn Glenn Have had to be a bit vague on some details to protect the innocent

It’ll get very messy very quickly. DVLA will rescind the V5 and only give it back to the person who can prove it matches their vehicle, after an inspection. V5 is not proof of ownership and all that.
VW vins were pretty secure for the period with special characters etc. I could tell within seconds which of the two was a restamp. If you’re confident yours isn’t, and by the sounds of it you have the scuttle tag too, I’d go for it but be prepared for a fight. Also there’s no playing nice with the other owner unfortunately. Either they loose or you will. There is no middle ground.
The other issue is dvla will likely ask for proof the car was built when it was. You need an historic v5 to prove this. If they won’t give you it because you aren’t the registered keeper, they may not give either of you the ID and it be lost altogether. They’re a law unto themselves in that respect. Either way it’s not going to be easy but stubbornness generally pays off.

I don't have the scuttle tag Just the vin on the floorpan, this buggy was built originally in 1972 from a pre 60 beetle Ttfn Glenn

So you have absolutely nothing other than the vin stamped on the tunnel? No supporting evidence at all?

Not really, the only other thing tying the vin and chassis ages together is the chassis having pin and link suspension Ttfn Glenn

You will probably find at somepoint the same person owned both.

Someone who knows a lot about registrations has said you should have no issue getting the logbook for yours, so persevere.

Pretty abysmal for the other person, their very nice buggy would become almost worthless. The only winner would be whoever did the cloning. Seems unusual to leave the donor intact still with its vin Ttfn Glenn

A minor update. After hearing nothing I fired off an email to dvla, revived a phone call back, everything is backed up due to covid, my application is progressing, subject to dealing with the registered keeper. No clues as to timeframe or next steps, just have to wait and see what happens Ttfn Glenn

Yeah, that's a nonsense. Renewed mine recently & it took no time at all.
I said it in my build thread, but I think something fundamental has changed at the DVLA. Everything I've done recently (registering an imported car, changing the reg. on another car, etc) has all been processed quickly & without fault.

Earlier dealings with dvla did happen very slowly, lately things seem to be happening much faster, when I sent my last enquiry the page stated, up to 3 working days, i was contacted on the first one, just waiting for the response Ttfn Glenn

I'm 12 weeks in waiting for a V5. Don't hold your breath. Lately my son and I have bought a few motorcycle, the v5 for them have all turned up within a week, even ones with no v5 only took just over 2, this buggy is the only one that has been delayed. Try the dvla website, for the where is my v5? bit, you should get a response within 3 working days. Ttfn Glenn

How confident are you that the vin checker you used came back with the correct reg? I can run it through a Haynes system if you like?
