I recently stumbled across some fascinating old F1 documentaries on YouTube. Before I knew it, I had a playlist. Then one thing led to another and before I knew that, I had a playlist full of old racing documentaries from Le Mans, Indycar, Nascar etc. I thought I'd start a thread for the F1 docs first and then add the other racing series afterwards. I know there are a few ex-F1 engineers on here and it's amazing to see what it looked like back in the day.
What's most amazing to me about most of these is the level of access granted. I don't think any of the current teams would allow that much access these days due to potential loss of IP. Next is the size of the teams; they were tiny back then in comparison. Current top F1 teams stretch to around 650-1000 employees! Then there's the sums of money spent. It was a lot back then, but today's top teams spend between £450 million and rumours up to the order of £750 million for the likes of Mercedes!
First up. Channel 4's Equinox in 1986. This follows Ford and Cosworth in the development of their turbo engine. It's excellent. I used to watch Equinox but I don't remember these at all. It's got guys sitting at a dyno twiddling knobs and blowing up engines, trackside engineers hacksawing bits off brake calipers trackside and some really early internet communication:

Next up is The Team: A Season with McLaren. This was a 7-part series on BBC2 in 1993. Again, I don't remember this one. More of an insight here into the characters at McLaren. I don't think I appreciated what a curse word Ron Dennis was! Look at th eway he talks to Häkkinen! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Season_with_McLarenI'll try and post links to all of them:

The Grid. Horizon documentary following Williams in 1981 in the ground effects era. I was too young to watch this one. Real old school. Warning in advance about very short shorts on the engineers and smoking while working!

Secret Life of Formula One. BMW this time. I think this was a DVD in either 2002 or 2004, so a bit more recent. I think this is Discovery Channel and it's a bit formulaic in comparison to those above ^ but there is still some good older footage. Watch these ones last if you have limited time!
Having just looked this one up, I think there might be some more parts to this.

Some old Le Mans ones here.
1982 BBC documentary about the 1981 race:
documentary on the 1980 race, centred round Canadian driver Allan Moffatt in a Porsche 935. This one is really good but it's desperately trying to dodge copyright missing some of the audio:
Derek Bell, 1982 race in a Porsche 956, originally on ITV:
These two aren't very retro but if you went to Le Mans at any point between 2000 and 2010 you'll watch these with rose tints, particularly the Audi v Peugeot war:

Le Mans again, 1982. Aston Martin Nimrod and a very young Tiff Needell. Amazing to see the same 20s Bentleys being driven down there that you see on the road down almost every year!

I can't help feeling that standing there watching the cars pass by on the mulsanne straight would make for a very long, and dull old day. I struggled to make it through five minutes of video.

Weekend of a Champion is a British 1972 documentary film that captures the effort of British Formula One racing driver Jackie Stewart to compete in the 1971 Monaco Grand Prix in Monte Carlo. Stewart's friend Roman Polanski produced the film and shadows him over the weekend.
Make sure its the latest updated version it has a nice surprise in the end..its a great watch and better than a lot of more modern documentaries.

one about Austria´s by far most talented (maybe the only one?) racing driver (hope the link works): Rindt was brilliant but I think you might have forgot this reasonably talented Austrian Andreas Nikolaus Lauda was an Austrian Formula One driver and aviation entrepreneur. He was a three-time F1 World Drivers' Champion, winning in 1975, 1977 and 1984, and is the only driver in F1 history to have been champion for both Ferrari and McLaren, the sport's two most successful constructors

well, i wouldn t necessarily think of Lauda, when talking about talent. he surely was a successful racing-driver, but if he hadn t worked that hard for it, he might have failed as often as with his airlines?
