Good morning all, I've been tempted by one of these, advertised locally and wondered if any of you had any experience of them? It's an auto in Carat spec, with a recent clean MOT and looks quite straight. It'll be a replacement for my 18 year old Multipla, so I'm quite used to the odd foible! Have an inspirational pic ( not the one I'm looking at sadly).

No experience of them but I've had a Bora VR6 for a year now and the engine is faultless, the chains are banded about as being a problem but it's not.

I missed out on a V6
I was gutted, I think they are the one to have, bit of vrooom to your van.
I still have the Benz 17” wheels and tyres plus the lowering springs left from mine to sell.

I ran a 5spd VR6 Sharan for a couple years. Worked it very hard carting the band and gear around the Country. Fast, comfortable, reliable, juicy! TBH, the Multipla JTD 120 that followed it, is as good, as fast (slightly mod'd), as spacious, and much better on fuel

What was the car like to service,as I'd imagine that lump is a tight squeeze in the front. Saying that, just changing the alternator on my Multipla involved the removal of quite a few things to get to it. Are there any unobtainium bits that anyone knows about?

One drummer to another, I've found the Multipla is better for the job. Admittedly, I didn't get involved in much servicing of the VW, but I do know that the Fiat is easier and cheaper to do virtually anything under the bonnet. New alternator cost me about £300 fitted. Recon VW alternator cost about the same. Timing belt in the Fiat is much easier and cheaper than VW timing chain, but doesn't last as long, of course. Can't think of particular unobtainiums, except most garages are more afraid of the Fiat than the VW ~ for no good reason! Fiat parts are cheaper. Last thing, the Multipla drives much more like a car than the heavier Sharan :-)

I'm also a fan of the so called really ugly ones (like mine) so may well hold out for one in better shape than mine.

Chains don't fail on the VR6 engine, it's the tensioners which are fairly simple to fit and real easy to check for issues (block 208 and 209 in vagcom), engine position sensors are expensive but other than that it's pretty bombproof - not many engines can take a turbo and double their bhp without and internal changes.

The one near me has done 85k and the owner tells me has a small amount of history,as well as only one key. The MOT history shows that maintenance appears to have been kept on top of,with some minor welding being required a few years ago. Being a Carat model it looks well spec'd with a good looking leather interior and the owner is confident everything works as it should. I'd need to fit a towbar and would look at changing the auto gearbox oil as part of a service. Grizz's wheels and springs are also a very tempting thought as well !

Those auto boxes are JATCO so make sure its working ok. Of that vintage look for corrosion that may have got through an MOT but may become an issue. Front of sills and rear subframe mount area are usual suspects.

Remember it's front wheel drive if you're planning to tow anything heavy

Remember it's front wheel drive if you're planning to tow anything heavy Cheers. I'd only be towing what my Multipla currently does,a small van trailer, for gigs that require all of my kit. There's 3 cased snares needing to find a space in there too!

I always managed to get the whole 6 pce kit, all the bass gear, and a Fender Rhodes, into both the Sharan and the Multi, plus the 3 of us!

A very valid point and I do keep my snares and cymbals in the house, with the trailer living in the garage. After speaking to a few people about the Sharan I've been warned about the auto box and that they can be troublesome,to the point of rendering the car an uneconomical fix. Looks like I'll be keeping an eye out for another Multipla with better bodywork than mine.
