I've one of those little propane space heaters - mine came from Aldi, but they're all the same - it does a great job of getting the temperature up quickly, but it really munches through the gas. Fumes and condensation, as already mentioned, are also a big issue.
I have a pair of wall mounted electric panel heaters that have timers and thermostats built in, and they do a good job of keeping things above freezing without too much expense, and I'm happy to leave them unattended. For comfort heat while I'm working I use a conventional fan heater, but am seriously considering a diesel powered unit having fitted one to my Land-Rover last year and been really impressed with it's output. In the OP's position I'd think a diesel unit would be ideal as it's only power requirement is a 12v battery.
