So the Galaxy is going up for sale and I wanted to retain the license plate for the truck. Tried the online transfer and got an error message. So called and got to a virtual chat They cannot tell me why this registration is non transferable. Any Ideas? I on;y noted after the system declined my request, that the V5c shows it as Non Transferab;e. If nothing else, I just want to understand why it is declined. Human error on the input side at some point? Thanks guys.

I've got a couple of vehicles with non-transferable plates. Two reasons on my ones.
1. Historically correct reg no. to replace one issued at time of first reg. So an ex-military vehicle registered at time of disposal but then a new reg correct for year of build put on.
2. Original plate transferred off, replacement number issued by DVLA and is not transferable. It's a 1960 landrover so if it could be transferred would be a good money maker.

The only time I've come across the "Non Transferrable" is on cars that have been imported and assigned an age related UK registration.
I owned a 1957 Vespa 125 that was imported from Belgium and has assigned a 3 number / 3 letter registration which would have been worth some money if it was transferrable.
I think it's to stop people importing cars, getting a valuable registration, transferring reg off and then scrapping car to make a profit.
Not sure if the galaxy was ever imported but dare say they use the "not transferrable" flag for other reasons too.

Most likely reason would seem to be that the car has already had a reg number taken from it before - DVLA don't want anyone continuously using a car to generate new reg numbers for onward sale.

Still, if Grizz has the time to try again it certainly won't hurt.

Itās strange because Iām sure the reg would have been a private reg to start with as itās not exactly a random number is it so donāt think it would have been originally assigned by the DVLA.

My old anglia was non transferable, even though i managed to keep the original number when I 're registered it. I had alot of folk trying to buy it for the plate and one plate dealer told me, to get round the non transferable, they just keep sending the v5 back with detail changes, keep changing address, or colour etc. Eventually they forget to tick the non transferable box.
No idea how true that is, but apparently it has to be manually ticked every time they issue a new v5.

If thatās the case then it could have been ticked in error the last time it was issued so worth grizz calling and speaking to a human to see if they have any details on record. Not sure how long ago your example was but Iād assume nowadays that the existing values would default and only the updated values would change as re-ticking that box is very prone to human error.

It happens when someone transfers a cherished plate with out retaining the previous registration number so if you apply to change the registration the previous number will permanently stay with the vehicle. My pal bought a Porsche with a good reg number was T2DAL. As his name was Darren result he thought. But upon investigation it was a non transferable reg someone had put another cherished plate with out retaining the previous so it automatically becomes ānon transferableā. Hope this helps š

I had that car in 2008. More than one plate dealer told me that, you know, the folk that buy old vehicles, take the number off and resell, just so they can then sell the plate separately. They both told me they were only interested in the car for the plate and the non transferable thing wasn't a problem.

They say itās not guaranteed if you donāt choose the preserve option but it doesnāt mean you canāt transfer your private reg on again to your next vehicle. Iāve done exactly that with my Ignis. I removed my private reg and it reverted back to original reg and now I can assign that reg to my cactus. One potential is if you buy a vehicle with the private registration already applied to it it becomes non transferrable, Iāve never been in that position to be honest. Iāve sold 4 cars on with the private reg left on them but Iāve never seen their subsequent V5s to know if the reg had become not transferable.

Could it be that that was what locked it down? Yes thatās the scenario i am predicting, it makes sense I guess as it was a private plate for the previous owner but in theory meaningless to the next owner unless the registration is related to a car brand / model in which case it could relate to the vehicle. I.e RAM reg for a Dodge Ram makes it car related or RAM reg for a Derby fan makes it owner related but obviously DVLA arenāt going to treat registrations in different ways so maybe every time a vehicle that has a private plate on it changes hands it becomes not transferable. We need someone to come along who has bought a car with a private reg on and successfully sold the reg on to disprove this theory

Then replaced with another ā cherishedā plate then the previous plate becomes its revert back to plate Ā unless you place the previous ācherishedā plate on retentionĀ I can see why that would happen but in that case it would mean that Grizz could retain the current cherished plate of N999 RAM and it would revert back to P33 RAM or whatever the previous cherished plate was. Unless the fact the original cherished plate wasnāt put on retention means itās not possible to revert back to the original cherished plate so you canāt transfer the current cherished plate off. Or do you mean that N999 RAM was the original cherished plate and the previous owner applied a different plate like S44 RAM and they retained that before selling the car on and it reverted back to N999 RAM ? That would make sense. I think itās all by the by now any way but handy knowing info in case any of us inadvertently fall into that trap. Thanks
