Guten Tag! Not the typical stuff from me overhere... But,i think it's worth... As i got my driving license at the age of 18 i wanted desperately a motorbike! Not a car at this moment...i was more a "biker"! And it MUST be a MZ!For those who not know:It stands for "Motorradwerke Zschopau".And it's "Made in GDR" A very basic 2 stroke,250cc 17HP bike from the eastern block. Why?Don't know...i liked it and it was dirty cheap at this time!Only 1980 DM new!1000 Euro in new money for a brandnew bike! So i went to the local dealer and got one! It got delivered at July,18,1988.... It breaked down first after only 9km with a faulty spark plug... There was some real issues with the quality....the electrics are a bit tricky. Have to make some improvements at all.... new luggage rack...and a Sebring exhaust system To cut a long story short:I had a lot of fun over 5 years with the MZ! Roadtrips with my mates to spain, france, hungary and yugoslavia... Have a lot nice memories... my first girlfriend.... After 5 years i got my first Harley and my sister get the MZ. She drove it into the ground.... For years the MZ sat at the street at her home without any cover.... In 2006 i got the bike back and it went into a dry storage.... Now it's time to bring it back to former glory! Shows nearly 70K KM... The rare, only for export auto-lube system! So,plan is to return it to the day i get it! Thanks for looking! Greet

My first bike was an MZ Simpson, 50cc All the local lads had FSIE’s, AP’s etc, and all took the p/ss, until they realised that since it wasn’t restricted to 30 i could ride past them sitting up, whilst they were flat on the tank! It’d do 50 without much difficulty , it might be uncool but its way faster than theirs I miss that bike!

That "local dealer", were the names Hein and Gericke involved? Yes,the main distributer at this time was Hein Gericke! You go to the Gericke shop and order the bike and a local dealer deliver it to you. Gericke at this time cleared the stock and the prices fall rapidly....bargain!Only 1980 DM!The ETZ 150 are at 1680DM... Greet

They were a good package and also cheap in the UK - they had better electrics than some of the italian alternatives
Bookmarked and looking forward to the journey - Good luck

They had a race series for these over here. When I was a young man we all had RD's GT's and KH's as 250cc could be ridden on L plates, no test no CBT, one of the guys had a brother who was, lets be kind, eccentric and bought one of these to be different could always tell when he was meeting up as you could here the ring dinging of his MZ before you could see him.He killed it when he got the pre mix wrong. as I recall they had a measure attached to the petrol cap on the early ones. Weirdly I'd have one now just to be different

They had a race series for these over here. I'd completely forgotten about that - it was a very cheap and competitive race series too

What makes it cool, is the fact that you bought it new & kept it, that’s awesome

I remember having seen them in the Hein Gericke catalogue, so You could order them by phone call or postal mail back then.
For all those non-germans here: Hein Gericke was a huge dealership company for biker clothes and gear.

They sold accessories and clothing from UK stores too for a while, have a few bits in the wardrobe still from early 2000s, think they left the UK market since then though?

They had several bankrupts and closed finally in 2018.
Long before that H.Gericke was rich enough to run a genuine shelby cobra in historic racing.

What makes it cool, is the fact that you bought it new & kept it, that’s awesome Yes,thats the point!32 years of ownership....i can't repeat that! Yesterday i did some work... drained the oil....there was some water in it... ???Hope it made no damage to the gearbox. At the moment the plan is not to open the engine.I overhauled it at 37k kms with new SKF bearings and a rebore to 300cc at the time in 1991... And it runs perfect till the end... I painted it in 1991 to this green...it's a colour from a VW golf 2....but now the plan is to switch back to the OEM blue.Have some parts from a donor so its easy to get the best parts together. Spare wheels.... Will blast some parts at work and repaint it in gloss black... Greet

I love that, it’s brilliant, I had a go on one of the race series bikes at three sisters, it was surprisingly good. Looking forward to your build. 😁

Good luck with the rebuild. It doesn't look like it will need too much. There is a great story behind this bike.
The UK race series is still going. However, the supply of cheap bikes with which to race on is definitely drying up.
